DeValkenere Scores 16, Vauters Adds Career High 14 as Women’s Basketball Falls at Northwood
MIDLAND, Mich. – Freshman Molly DeValkenere (Milwaukee, Wis./Brookfield) scored a team-high 16 points and sophomore Tayler Vauters (Rockville, Ind./Riverton Parke) added a career-high 14 points but the Purdue University Northwest women’s basketball team was unable come up with the victory against host Northwood at Riepma Arena Saturday.
The Timberwolves (6-8, 3-3 GLIAC) defeated the Pride (2-10, 0-6 GLIAC), 78-48, inside the Bennett Sports Center, Saturday.
PNW led 6-3 in the early going thanks to a layup by DeValkenere before a run by Northwood made it 19-14 at the end of the first quarter.
Lanie Allen (East Noble, Ind./East Noble) nailed a layup with 8:00 left in the second quarter to make it 22-20 but that was the closest the Pride got the rest of the game.
Northwood made a 9-2 run midway through the second quarter before PNW fought back and made consecutive baskets, with a three-pointer by Vauters and a layup by Bayley Goodman (Fowler, Ind./Benton Central) to make it 31-27 Northwood. The Timberwolves had the answer, scoring the next 11 points to close out the half with a 42-27 lead.
The Timberwolves started off the fourth quarter with another run but Vauters hit a trifecta to make it 66-42 with 7:45 left in the game.
Northwood had four players reach double figures in the game, including Grace German, who had 15 points and nine rebounds.
PNW returns to action next Thursday, January 10 as the Pride host Wayne State on the Hammond Campus starting at 5 p.m. CT.
