Dwayne Haskins Wins Silver Football as Big Ten’s Best Player
Award is voted on by the Big Ten Conference head coaches
COLUMBUS, Ohio – It is official. Dwayne Haskins, Ohio State’s ultra-talented quarterback who is rewriting school and Big Ten Conference records, is the best player in the Big Ten Conference this season. The title is given to Haskins after winning the Chicago Tribune Silver Football award, which goes to the Big Ten’s best player as voted by the conference’s head coaches. Coaches are not allowed to vote for their own players.
The award comes two days after Haskins was named the Big Ten Conference’s Graham-George Offensive Player of the Year and the league’s Griese-Brees Quarterback of the Year.
Haskins, from Potomac, Md., and The Bullis School, has lead the Buckeyes to an 11-1 record and to the Big Ten Conference title game against Northwestern Saturday night at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis. He’s guided the Buckeyes to wins over four ranked teams, including last Saturday’s 62-39 victory over No. 4 Michigan when he threw for 396 yards and six touchdowns against the nation’s No. 1 defensive unit including No. 1 in both passing defense and passing efficiency defense.
Haskins leads the nation in touchdown passes with 42 and he ranks second with 4,081 passing yards. He has set nearly two dozen school and Big Ten records already this season including Big Ten marks for passing yards and touchdowns.
And while he doesn’t have a trip to New York City scheduled just yet, as peers Tua Tagovailoa of Alabama and Kyler Murray of Oklahoma most deservingly do, Haskins’ 12-game stats are right there with Tagovailoa’s and Murray’s, and also with the 12-game stats of all five of the most recent Heisman Trophy winning quarterbacks. - total offensive yards; Michigan’s Denard Robinson owns that record with 4,272 yards set in 2010 but Haskins is just 65 yards shy of that with 4,208.
