Edey Named Big Ten Player of the Week for the 4th Time
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – After a dominating week, Purdue junior center was named the Big Ten Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday afternoon.
It marks the fourth time this season that Edey won the award, the third-most awards in a season by a Purdue player in school history and the sixth most in Big Ten history.
Edey averaged 21.7 points, 11.7 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 1.7 blocks per game in three Purdue contests last week. He was 26-of-42 (.619) from the field and 13-of-15 (.867) from the free throw line. He scored 19 points with 11 rebounds, three assists and two blocks vs. Rutgers, added 16 points, 11 rebounds and four assists against Ohio State, then erupted for 30 points, 13 rebounds, three assists and three blocks against Penn State.
He became the fifth player in school history with three games of 30 points and 10 rebounds in the same season, and the first to do so in almost 30 years (Glenn Robinson, Joe Barry Carroll, Dave Schellhase, Terry Dischinger). His three 30-10 games this year equal the combined total this season of all Big Ten players and is tied for the nation’s lead with Chattanooga’s Jake Stephens.
Edey surpassed the 600-rebound plateau against Penn State, becoming the second-fastest player in school history to score 1,000 points with 600 rebounds and 100 blocked shots, needing just 80 games to reach the mark (Joe Barry Carroll – 75).
Edey has been dominant in conference play, averaging 21.4 points, 14.8 rebounds, 2.6 blocks and 2.0 assists per game in Purdue’s 4-1 league start. In the last 30 years, there have been just two players previously, and none from major conferences, to average 20 points, 10 rebounds, two blocks and two assists per game in league play.
The No. 3-ranked Boilermakers will host Nebraska on Friday, Jan. 13, beginning at 7 p.m. ET, in Mackey Arena.
