WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue junior guard Carsen Edwards has been named a National Association of Basketball Coaches second-team All-American, the organization announced today.
The NABC is one of the four outlets used when selecting consensus All-Americans, joined by the Associated Press, the Sporting News and the United States Basketball Writers Association (USBWA). He was earlier named a third-team honoree by the Sporting News and a second-team selection by the USBWA.
Edwards has now been named an All-American in three of the four organizations that comprise the consensus All-American selections. Should he be named to the AP All-American team when it comes out, Edwards will be a consensus All-American, the second time in three years that a Purdue player has been named a consensus All-American (2017 – Caleb Swanigan).
Edwards, who is named one of five finalists for the Jerry West Award which honors the nation’s top shooting guard, enters this week’s Sweet 16 with a 23.6 scoring average, tops in the Big Ten and the most for a Big Ten player since Minnesota’s Quincy Lewis in 1999 (23.1 PPG). He has set the Purdue single-season (120) and career (266) 3-point records already and is also averaging 3.6 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game.
Edwards recently moved into eighth place on the Purdue career scoring list (1,849) and his 1,849 points are the most for a Purdue player in school history through his junior season.
In 34 games this year, Edwards has scored 803 points, already making him one of five players in school history with multiple 650-point seasons. His 803 points rank third on the Purdue single-season list, and his total is the most for a Boilermaker player since Glenn Robinson scored a school-record 1,030 points in 1994.
Edwards is currently the leading scorer in the NCAA Tournament, having scored 68 points in the tournament’s first two games. He has 153 career points in the NCAA Tournament, needing eight to tie the career record for points scored by a Purdue player in the NCAA Tournament.
Edwards was a three-time Big Ten Player of the Week this season and was the Blue Ribbon Yearbook preseason National Player of the Year. He entered the year as one of just three returning All-Americans in college basketball (North Carolina’s Luke Maye and Virginia’s Kyle Guy).
Edwards and the Boilermakers face Tennessee in Thursday’s South Regional semifinal Thursday at 7:30 p.m. ET, at the KFC Yum! Center in Louisville, Kentucky.
