LAKELAND, Fla.—Southeastern University Men’s Basketball Coach Kevin Lubbers announced his 2019-20 schedule this afternoon.
The 31-game slate begins on the road in Tennessee at the Chick-Fil-A Classic, hosted by Bethel University. SEU will face the host Wildcats in the opener on November 8th, and will take on Cumberland University the next day.
Fans will get their first look at the Fire at The Furnace on November 16th in their Sun Conference opener against St. Thomas University. SEU will play host to NCAA Division II University of Puerto Rico-Bayamon two days later.
In the final year of two divisions of NAIA basketball, the Fire will face a third NAIA Division I program in Our Lady of the Lake in Lakeland on November 26th.
“We are, ‘stepping into the arena’ with this schedule,” said Lubbers, who enters his first season in Lakeland. “Throughout non-conference play, we will face very good teams including several NAIA Top 25, a few NAIA Division I and NCAA Division II teams, as well. Our focus is simply to invest in the process required to improve one day to the next, and from game to game.”
Southeastern will head to the NAIA Division II Showcase in Kingsport, Tenn. once again during Thanksgiving, facing Washington Adventist and Brescia. The Fire will host their annual invitational on December 13 and 14, welcoming the University of Saint Francis (Ind.), Toccoa Falls, and Warner.
This kicks off a tough stretch during Christmas Break, where SEU will host Taylor University (12/18), William Jessup (12/20), and an exhibition against NCAA Division II Walsh (12/21) before heading to South Dakota for the Hoop City Classic.
That’s where the Fire will face Morningside and Dakota Wesleyan. Morningside was the No. 1 Seed in the Cramer Bracket at last year’s national championship and advanced to the quarterfinals. Dakota Wesleyan advanced to the second round before suffering a one-point loss to overall No. 1 Seed Indiana Wesleyan.
Sun Conference play resumes on January 4 in Miami Gardens where the Fire will face Florida Memorial in a month where SEU will play four of its seven games on the road.
February will feature four of six at home, including Polk County rival Warner on February 6.
