BABSON PARK, Fla. — The Southeastern University men’s tennis team was tired of 5-4 matches.
Four of their seven losses were by one point.
In its 20th match of the season, the Fire flipped the script.
Santiago Haas came away with a thrilling three-set victory at No. 4 Singles to give the Fire a 5-4 win and a berth in The Sun Conference Tournament for the first time since 2016.
Wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles had the Fire in a position to need to just split the singles matches for the win.
Felipe Barbosa won the second and third sets to win at No. 2 singles and Enrique Martinez bounced back from a tough loss last Wednesday to win in straight sets at No. 3.
Haas won the first set 6-0, then had to wait out a lightning delay and dropped the second 7-6, falling 7-3 in the tiebreaker. With both players grinding through the final set, Haas came away with a 6-3 win.
