No. 5 Southeastern Downs Warner in TSC Opener

LAKELAND, Fla.- The No. 5 Southeastern University women’s soccer team opened up Sun Conference play with a resounding 5-0 victory over the Warner University Royals in their TSC-opener. The Fire are now 6-1 all-time under head coach Randy Belli following a loss and 33-2-3 against Sun Conference opponents under Coach Belli.

Senior forward Uchenna Kanu turned in another stellar performance for Southeastern. The captain from Abia, Nigeria netted three goals and recorded an assist. This marked the 23rd hat trick of Kanu’s collegiate career and she has now scored 65 goals in Sun Conference play all-time.

Kanu netted her first score in the 17th minute, stripping a ball away from Warner defender and beating the keeper one-on-one to put SEU up 1-0.

Despite outshooting the Royals 11-4 throughout the first 45 minutes of play, the Fire took just a 1-0 advantage into the half.

After 10 minutes of scoreless play to start the second half, SEU put three more goals past WU in a span of 6:05.

First Kanu netted her second goal of the contest in the 56th minute. Kanu finished far post after receiving a through ball from junior forward Aisha Solorzano after graduate forward Yulie Lopez offered a short cross to Lopez.

In the 60th minute, Kanu clinched the hat trick, burying a through ball from Lopez after Lopez had received the cross from freshman defender Chloe Martin. The goal put the Fire ahead 3-0.

Lopez put her name on the scoresheet in the 62nd minute, rocketing a cross in the box in from Kanu. Lopez pushed her season goal total to seven and assist total to eight with her performance while Kanu now sits at 17 goals and six assists on the season.

In the 84th minute, senior midfielder Skyler Streets netted the first goal of her SEU career, burying a ball from 35 yards out into the upper left corner after it was passed to her by senior defender Siobhan Longmore to put SEU up 5-0.

Sophomore goalkeeper Holly Eddins earned her fourth shutout of the season, recording five saves in the full 90 minutes played.

Next up, the Fire host the Ave Maria University Gyrenes at the SEU Soccer Complex this Saturday. Game time is set for Noon.
