CLERMONT, Fla.—Timely hitting, and excellent pitching propelled Southeaster to a 6-0 win over Keiser in its first game at The Sun Conference Softball Tournament.
With the win, the Fire (40-14) will take on regular season champion Thomas on Friday at 2:30 p.m. with the winner of that contest advancing to Saturday’s title game.
A delayed steal with two outs in the bottom of the second inning by Kiah Ferrell proved to be a big catalyst for SEU, as Britt Robinson picked up an RBI single up the middle to get the Fire on the board first.
Keiser (22-20) had a chance to even up the game in the next half inning, but a popped up bunt, and miscue on the bases cost them a runner in scoring position and a chance at the equalizing run.
Southeastern benefit from a two-out error in the bottom of the fourth with runners at second and third, which resulted in two more runs coming in, giving the Fire a 3-0 lead heading to the fifth.
Two more runs came across in the sixth on a bunt single by Heather Faulk, which turned into two runs on a throwing error.
Junior pitcher Hannah Bodenhorn cruised to her 19th win of the season, surrendering five hits and two walks over seven innings of work. Boddenhorn retired 10 of the last 11 she faced, allowing a one-out single in the top of the seventh.
Faulk was the only player for either team with more than one hit, going 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Brandee Pietrzak was 1-for-1, also drawing a walk and a hit by pitch.
