LAKELAND, Fla.—Following its first outdoor meet of the season, the Southeastern track program had three athletes recognized for their performances by The Sun Conference.
Darin Garland, Davonte Vanterpool, and Namiah Simpson were all named Players of the Week in their respective disciplines.
Garland was named Men’s Field Athlete of the Week, as he became the first qualifier in the triple jump in program history with an NAIA “A” Standard jump of 14.62 meters. Through two weekends, he is the best of the two qualifiers in the event by .22 meters.
Vanterpool was named Men’s Track Athlete of the Week after he clinched a trip to NAIA Nationals with a “B” Standard in the 110 Hurdles, winning the event in a time of 14.78. Vanterpool is one of just three athletes in the NAIA to qualify in the event in the first two weekends. He also hit 1.88 meters in the high jump.
Simpson, an indoor All-American in the 400, was named Women’s Track Athlete of the Week after she hit the NAIA “A” Standard in the 400 hurdles in her first outdoor meet to qualify for nationals. She also ran a leg of the 4 x 100 relay, which hit the NAIA “B” Standard and qualified.
The Fire are back in action on Friday at the UCF Black and Gold Challenge.
