LOUISVILLE, Ky.—The Southeastern wrestling team wrapped up an impressive weekend at Freedom Hall, taking fifth place at the NWCA Team Duals.
The Fire went 4-1, defeating four teams ranked ahead of them in the coaches’ poll.
Southeastern started Saturday with a 24-21 win over No. 8 Lindsey Wilson, which defeated SEU 29-10 at The Fire Pit just 21 days ago.
In the fifth-place match, the Fire knocked off No. 11 Missouri Valley 26-13.
Against Lindsey Wilson, Eddie Barrett scored a 12-11 decision over No. 14 Cagen Wallace to get the team going. Xavier Williamson followed suit with a win by pin over returning All-American and No. 15 Brady Moser in the second period. Stephen Kelle came up with a 15-12 win at 165 over Derrick Smallwood, who is ranked eighth at 157.
Ethan Owen knocked off tenth-ranked Casper Sherow to put the Fire up 14-0 after three matches against Missouri Valley following Williamson’s technical fall victory. At 174, Carlos Diaz came away with an upset of 14th-ranked Dalton Tipton in a 7-6 decision, and Luis Peguero’s win in sudden victory at 197 clinched the match.
The Fire return to action next Saturday at Cumberland University.
