Four-Run First Helps RV TU Best Arizona Christian

GLENDALE, Ariz. – The Trojans took the victory on Wednesday night in Arizona, defeating Arizona Christian (0-1) by a 6-3 margin.

RV TU (3-1) continued its streak of hot starts, impacting the scoreboard in the top of the first inning for the fourth time in as many games. Four runs came in for the TU squad, which would eventually be enough for the win.

Discipline at the plate helped the Purple and Gold begin the scoring outburst. The Trojans drew four walks and a hit by pitch to bring in the first two runs of the contest. Cam Knepp capped off the scoring with a two-out two-RBI double for the only hit in the four-run frame.

On the night, the Firestorm walked 15 Trojans to create five of the six runs for TU.

Knepp and Nick Rusche paired up for an insurance run in the seventh inning. Knepp grabbed his second hit of the game, before Rusche brought him home with a triple to right field. TJ Bass added an extra-base hit of his own, launching a double in the ninth to give Taylor its sixth and final run.

The TU hurlers combined for a strong outing, allowing just five hits and three runs. The trio tossed 11 strikeouts, keeping the ACU offense suppressed.

Luke Shively nabbed the start on Wednesday for his first appearance of the 2021 campaign. The junior logged four whiffs through four innings of work.

Mitch Ubelhor finished off the game for the Trojans on the mound, putting out seven-straight ACU batters. TU’s closer recorded the save in the effort, picking up three strikeouts in 2.1 innings.

Taylor is slated to continue the Coach Calderone Invitational on Thursday, as the team is set to face No. 19 Benedictine University at Mesa at 8:00 pm (EST).
