Freel Shines; Purdue Northwest Baseball Splits Doubleheader With UIndy

INDIANAPOLIS – Freshman Kyle Freel (Dyer, Ind./Lake Central) had an impressive start on the mound in game one to help the Purdue Northwest baseball team to a doubleheader split with University of Indianapolis Tuesday afternoon at Greyhound Park in Indianapolis, Ind.  The Pride won the first game, 4-1, but dropped the second game, 6-2.  Freel threw 6.2 innings of the first game and allowed six hits, one run (earned) and a walk with four strikeouts to claim his third victory of the season (3-3).

Freshman Kevin McCune (Munster, Ind./Andrean) got PNW on the scoreboard early in game one driving in junior Austin Kordik (West Chicago, Ill./College of DuPage/Community) from third base on a groundout in the top of the first inning.  The Greyhounds tied the game in the bottom half of the first inning with a run off a groundout as well.  Freshman Darius Kendall (Merrillville, Ind./Merrillville) put the Pride in front for good in the top of the fourth inning with a RBI double to the gap in left centerfield and senior Mike Mikulich (Hebron, Ind./Hebron) added a RBI single to right field later in the inning to put PNW in front, 3-1.

A bases-loaded walk by freshman John Cory (Lowell, Ind./Lowell) in the top of the seventh brought Kordik home for the game’s final run.  Freel got the first two batters retired in the bottom of the seventh, but junior Joe Davi (New Lenox, Ill./Joliet JC/Lincoln-Way Central) came in to secure the final out and earn his fifth save of the season on an infield pop-up.  Kordik finished game one a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with a double and two runs scored.

UIndy took a 3-0 lead on Purdue Northwest in game two scoring a run off a RBI single in the bottom of the third and a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth on a RBI single and an error.  Senior Jacob Lane (Indianapolis, Ind./Lawrence Central) drove in Kordik on a fielder’s choice in the top of the fifth and sophomore Alex Batistatos (Hobart, Ind./Hobart) hit a RBI triple down the right field line later in the frame to pull the Pride within a run, 3-2.

However, the Greyhounds scored three more runs in the bottom of the sixth behind five hits, including a RBI double, to secure the victory in game two.  PNW could not rally back in the top of the seventh going down in order to end the game.  Sophomore Hunter Thorn (Portage, Ind./Portage) led the Pride with two hits in the late game.

Purdue Northwest (14-14 overall/6-9 GLIAC) hosts a non-conference doubleheader against No. 6 nationally ranked University of Illinois-Springfield (UIS) on Wednesday, April 18.  The first game of the pair is scheduled for a 2 p.m. CT start at Dowling Park.
