Fryman joins 1,000-point club in HU’s 75-55 W over Bethel

FOR RELEASE January 21, 2019
MISHAWAKA, Ind. – It was a milestone day for junior Sarah Fryman Saturday afternoon at Gates Gymnasium. Not only did the 5-9 forward pour in a game-best 27 points to guide her team to a 75-55 win over Bethel College (10-12, 2-8), she also became just the 25th Forester to join the 1,000-point club.

Fryman entered the contest needing 16 points to reach the four-digit landmark. With 1:23 left in the third quarter, HU’s leading scorer scored on a left hand hook to eclipse the 1,000-point mark with her 17th point of the day. It gave her team a 59-47 lead that she would add to in the fourth to turn the game into a lopsided affair.

The Huntington native tossed in ten points in the final ten minutes, including two traditional three-point plays, to account for all but six of HU’s points in the quarter.  For impressive as her offensive display was, Huntington’s defense was equally noteworthy as they limited their hosts to just four points to wrap up their fourth 20+ point win of the year.

In addition to pouring in 27 points, Fryman also enjoyed game-high rebounding honors with seven, passed out three dimes and swiped two steals.  Sam Hammel collected 12 points in addition to handing out five assists. Jade Clement also added 12 points, all from downtown, while Maddie Richer registered ten.

Clement came off the bench to spark HU in the first half. After burying her first long ball as the first quarter buzzer sounded, the sophomore guard drained three more in the second to establish a new career high and send Culler’s squad into the locker room with a 43-31 lead.

The Foresters scored the game’s first eight points to lay claim on a lead the entire afternoon. They shot over 50.0 percent in each frame to finish 28-for-53 for 52.8 percent from the floor. They also canned ten of their 12 freebies to finish 83.3 percent from the charity stripe in a game they also enjoyed a slight rebounding advantage, 31-28, and committed three fewer TOs than their hosts.

Jessica Erwin topped the Pilots with 18 points and five assists. Kelsey Brickner and Maci Heimlich netted 13 and ten points respectively.

With this win, Huntington improves to 13-8 on the year, 6-4 in league action. They return to the friendly confines of Platt Arena on Wednesday seeking to avenge a loss earlier this season to #RV Saint Francis.
