– Top-ranked Alabama strengthened its hold on the top spot in the poll, garnering 45 of a possible 52 first-place votes and 822 points. After dispatching Louisville in Orlando, the Crimson Tide received seven more first-place votes and increased their margin over No. 2 Clemson by 44 points from the preseason poll.
– No. 2 Clemson and No. 3 Georgia remained in their spots. Clemson received four first-place votes and Georgia one. No. 6 Auburn, after beating Washington, received the other two first-place votes. There was only minor shuffling around of teams after that, except for the three teams that dropped out, two after losses.
– Miami (Fla.) fell out of the poll after losing to LSU in Arlington, Texas, and Michigan also dropped out after falling at Note Dame. LSU jumped into the poll at No. 11 and Virginia Tech, which won at Florida State, popped in at No. 15. West Virginia defeated Tennessee and moved in at No. 14, TCU dropped out of the poll despite winning its opener over Southern.
