Gerig Collects MSFA Accolade for Special Teams Play
FINDLAY, Ohio – The Mid-States Football Association announced its Mideast League Players of the Week on Monday, tabbing Taylor’s Tyler Gerig as its MSFA Mideast League Special Teams Player of the Week for his efforts in TU’s game against RV Saint Xavier.
Gerig nearly brought the Trojans back from a 35-7 halftime deficit with a pair of lengthy touchdown returns midway through the third quarter. The senior corner and return man drew TU to within 35-29 with a 65-yard punt return to the end zone less than five minutes after tying a MSFA record with a 96-yard touchdown return on a fumble recovery.
In addition to the pair of touchdowns, Gerig averaged 47.0 yards per punt return for the Purple and Gold while adding four tackles and a pass breakup in the end zone on defense.
The award is the first for Gerig in his career at Taylor and is the second weekly honor from the MSFA for the TU football program this fall.
Gerig and the Trojans (2-2, 0-0 MSFA) will open league play on Saturday with a 4:00 pm start at No. 25 Siena Heights (4-0, 1-0 MSFA).
