Gerig Headlines TU’s All-MSFA Postseason Awards
FINDLAY, Ohio – The Taylor University football program collected five postseason honors, with the Mid-States Football Association announcing the All-MSFA Mideast League Teams recently.
Tyler Gerig led the way for TU, earning Second-Team All-MSFA Mideast League recognition as a return specialist and taking Honorable Mention honors for his work as a defensive back. Jackson Bronkema joined Gerig as a Second-Team All-MSFA standout, with Brandon George and Hunter Brooks also collecting Honorable Mention All-MSFA nods.
Gerig earned the second and third All-MSFA honors of his career, with all three coming in the past two seasons. The senior averaged 21.3 yards per punt return for the Trojans and had a 65-yard return for a touchdown. From his corner and safety positions, Gerig posted his finest season, ranking second on the squad with 53 tackles, while adding a 96-yard fumble return for a touchdown.
Bronkema was voted Second-Team All-MSFA from his safety position after leading the Trojans with 70 tackles during his breakout season. The junior also picked up a team-leading two interceptions, recovered one fumble, posted 1.5 sacks and finished with 2.5 hits for lost yardage.
Seniors George and Brooks rounded out the list of award recipients for TU, as each was named Honorable Mention All-MSFA. George helped Taylor average 141.9 rushing yards per game from his center position, while Brooks handled the snapping duties for the Trojans on special teams.
The Trojans closed their 71st season at 3-7 overall, with one loss coming to NCAA Division I FCS Butler and five others coming against teams ranked in the final NAIA Top-25 Poll of the regular season.
TU is set to graduate 21 seniors and return 65 student-athletes for the 2019 campaign. That group will include 12 starters, highlighted by Bronkema’s return to the defensive unit.
