Goshen College names Dr. Erica Albertin athletic director

Michigan native, first female AD in 25 years, brings wellness background to forefront of athletic department

Goshen College has announced the hiring of Dr. Erica Albertin, a veteran in the field of student-athlete health and wellness as an athletic trainer and administrator, as the college’s athletic director.

She has been at Goshen as the head athletic trainer since 2016, serving as interim athletic director twice in that span, and was the associate athletic director and the athletic department’s Senior Woman Administrator from 2018 to 2020. In these capacities, she has been responsible for implementing the department’s strategic plan, including increasing mental health and athletic training resources while also augmenting the department’s fundraising efforts. She has also taught several courses as an adjunct professor in the kinesiology department.

Albertin is a 2009 graduate of Manchester University in North Manchester, Indiana, where she studied exercise science and athletic training and played basketball and soccer. She holds a doctorate in athletic training from the University of Idaho.

“We are excited to welcome Dr. Erica Albertin to the athletic director position, particularly because she understands the health and mental health of our student-athletes,” said Dr. Gilberto Perez Jr., vice president for student life. “Her ability to lead our athletic department in a holistic manner will serve us well in the coming years.”

“I am honored to serve as Goshen College’s next athletic director,” Albertin said. “Thank you to President Stoltzfus and the college leadership, the search committee, the athletic department staff, the student-athletes, and all of the Maple Leafs for this opportunity.”

Albertin will be Goshen’s second female athletic director to oversee both men’s and women’s athletics, following Linda Shetler, who served from 1993 to 1996. She will also be the second woman among the 10 Crossroads League athletic directors, joining Lori Culler at Huntington University.

Before coming to Goshen, Albertin worked at Dominican University in Illinois from 2012 to 2016, serving as assistant athletic trainer and then head athletic trainer. She also worked for Athletico Physical Therapy in the Chicago area.

In addition to her work in the college setting, Albertin has worked as an athletic trainer with the United States women’s national soccer team and has presented at regional and national athletic training conventions. Her articles have appeared in the Journal of Sport Rehabilitation and the Journal of Rehabilitation Sciences & Research.

“My priority is to lead in a way that builds trust, highlights joy and collaborates with others,” Albertin said. “I have met some fantastic student-athletes while working at GC and am excited to step into the athletic director position. The health and well-being of our student-athletes will continue to be a guiding principle in my leadership. I will continue to build on our goal of creating champions in the classroom, the competitions and the community.”

A native of Holland, Michigan, Albertin is a member of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics, the NAIA Athletic Directors Association and the National Athletic Trainers Association along with several regional and state organizations.

Away from the office, she volunteers with the Center for Healing and Hope in Goshen and has worked with the youth groups at multiple churches, including leading high school students on trips to Zambia and El Salvador.
