Goshen High School and Edward Jones are proud to announce the student-athlete of the month award to recognize athletic and academic excellence. A senior male and female student-athlete will be selected from August-May each school year. At the end of the year, a $1,000 scholarship will be awarded to one male and one female student athlete of the month, as selected by the GHS coaching staff.
The winners of the Edward Jones Student-Athlete of the Month Award for August are Jocelyn Valderrama and Ryan Harmelink
Jocelyn is the daughter of Randy and Sarah Valderrama. Jocelyn is a defender on the soccer team. In the first week of the season, Jocelyn anchored a defense that recorded shutouts against Elkhart Memorial (5-0) and Elkhart Central (2-0). Jocelyn scored one goal against Elkhart Memorial. Jocelyn has a 4.21 GPA and is ranked number one in her class. Jocelyn is a member of the National Honor Society. Jocelyn has been named a Kiwanis Scholar Athlete throughout her high school career for her hard work both in and out of the classroom. After high school, Jocelyn is hoping to attend the University of Tampa to study psychology.
Ryan is the son of Erin and Tonya Harmelink. Ryan went 4-2 at number one singles despite playing through a knee injury. He is a returning honorable mention All-NLC selection at number one singles. Ryan leads the team by example with his physical fitness as well as his mental and emotional competitive toughness. Ryan has a 4.20 GPA and is ranked number two in his class. Ryan is a member of the National Honors Society, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Student Athletic Council, Key Club, Stay in bounds Ambassadors, and his church youth group. Ryan has received the Paul Underwood Mental Attitude Awards twice and has won the Tennis MVP. He has received the Kiwanis Scholar Athlete award throughout his high school career for his outstanding grades while participating in athletics. After high school, Ryan plans to attend college and major in biochemistry.
