Award winners and Ingold Complex donors to be recognized before soccer match

GOSHEN, Ind. — The Goshen College Student-Athlete Advisory Committee has announced plans for a “Blackout” and tailgate celebration Saturday as part of Homecoming weekend on the GC campus.

Building on the success of this year’s #PurpleShirtFridays, the SAAC encourages Maple Leaf fans, students and supporters to wear black to the women’s soccer game at 2 p.m. Saturday when the Maple Leafs take on Marian University at the John Ingold Athletic Complex. While the homecoming game will be a tall task with the Knights tanked 17th in the nation, Goshen will seek to build on its success in a 1-1 draw against Marian on the same field last season.

SAAC’s tailgate party, including cornhole and ladderball games, will kick off at noon on the practice soccer field.

Also on Saturday, the Maple Leafs Athletic Club will host a reception to recognize the Maple Leafs Athletic Club’s Dr. Roman Gingerich and Dr. Ruth Gunden Champions of Character Award recipients, Byron Shenk ’63 and Penina (Acayo) Laker ’11. Both award winners will speak at the reception, slated for noon in the turf room on the west end of the Roman Gingerich Recreation-Fitness Center.

Following the reception, GC will unveil a donor recognition plaque at the entrance to the John Ingold Athletic Complex. The plaque, which is located between the baseball and softball fields on the path between the RFC and the soccer field, recognizes many of the donors who have helped make the last three years of complex improvements a reality. That unveiling is set for 1:05 p.m.

Other events slated for Saturday include a men’s basketball intrasquad game at 10 a.m. in Gunden Gymnasium and men’s and women’s basketball alumni games.

The baseball and men’s soccer alumni games scheduled for Saturday have been canceled due to the weather forecast.
