Â
UPLAND, Ind. – Despite three Trojans reaching double-figure kills on Wednesday night the Trojans fell in four sets to Grace in a Crossroads League showdown inside Odle Arena.
Becca Gerig tallied 16 kills while Kayla Springer added 12 and Addy Bailey totaled ten kills but it wasn’t enough to push the Trojans to victory against the Lancers as Grace secured a season sweep of TU.
Taylor (16-11, 7-7 CL) appeared to be in control of the opening set as the Trojans built a 15-10 advantage before Grace came charging back by scoring 11 of the next 13 points to take a 21-17 lead. The Trojans closed to within 22-20 but the Lancers took advantage of 11 TU hitting errors to tally a 25-21 win.
The Grace (15-10, 8-5 CL) offense found a rhythm in the second set as the Lancers tallied 17 kills and just two hitting errors in 34 attacks for a .441 hitting percentage as Grace rolled to a 25-15 lead in the second set.
The Trojans responded with a dominant 25-14 victory in the third set as the Grace offense cooled and Taylor’s offense cut back on hitting errors with 13 kills and just three errors in 31 attempts (.323).
However, Grace managed to regain control in the fourth set as the Lancers hit .234 while Taylor managed just 12 kills and nine errors in 52 attempts (.058) as Grace ended the match with a 25-16 win.
Taylor finished the night with a .137 hitting percentage while Grace tallied a .212 hitting percentage.
Junior Haley Harrell dished out 33 assists and added a team-high 19 digs for Taylor while Gerig added 17 digs and Samantha Korn tallied 16 digs.
With the loss Taylor moves to 7-7 in Crossroads League play and into fourth place.
The Trojans will take a break from Crossroads League play this weekend as TU travels to Grand Rapids, Michigan for four matches in the Cornerstone Tournament, including match ups with No. 16 Madonna and No. 18 Cornerstone. Taylor returns to Crossroads League play next Wednesday when TU travels to Huntington.
