Grace spikers tripped up by No. 1 Knights
WINONA LAKE, Ind. – Grace’s volleyball team was unable to manufacture an upset against No. 1 Marian, losing in three sets on Saturday.
The Lady Lancers (6-4, 6-4 Crossroads League) were shorthanded and playing their first match in three weeks.
Grace got off to a sluggish start in each of the three sets at the Manahan Orthopaedic Capital Center.
In the opener, Grace fell behind 13-7 and had to call a timeout. Paige Eakright had an emphatic kill on the next play after the timeout, but it was not enough to generate momentum.
The Knights (10-2, 10-2 CL) had 16 kills in the set en route to a 25-13 win.
The second set saw Grace fall into a 16-7 hole. After a Grace timeout, Eakright and Cassadi Colbert jumpstarted the Lady Lancers’ offense.
Eakright had five kills in the set and Colbert added four more. Grace quickly pulled to within six and eventually trailed 23-18 after a kill from Mackenzie DeLong (her first collegiate kill in her first varsity match).
But Marian won the next two points to earn a 25-18 victory.
The third set saw the Knights pull away and never look back. Marian won 16 of the first 19 points and coasted to a 14-point win.
Eakright was a lone bright spot offensively with 10 kills on a .375 percentage. Colbert had six kills.
Gabbey Harrington notched 18 assists and 11 digs, and Julia Nagy added 10 digs.
Gina Novotny (9 digs), Brittany Baize (7) and Emily Sharp (7) also manned Grace’s backline.
The Lady Lancers will have a quick turnaround, returning home on Monday for a 7 p.m. clash against Huntington.
