CHICAGO, Ill. – The Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference announced on Tuesday that Senior Samantha Hockstra has been named CCAC Defensive Player of the Week and sophomore McKenzie Powell has been named CCAC Setter of the Week for the second consecutive week after leading Indiana University South Bend volleyball to a perfect 3-0 record last week.
In three matches last week, Hockstra led the Titans with 40 digs, averaging 4.44 per set. The senior defensive specialist propelled IUSB to a perfect 3-0 week, boosting the winning streak to five games. The consecutive winning streak is also tied with CCAC leader, Trinity Christian, for the longest active conference winning streak.
Hockstra registered at least one ace in each of the three wins to finish with five on the week. The Fruitport, Mich., native’s top dig effort on the week came last Thursday, Sept. 12 in the victory over Governors State where she totaled 15 in three sets.
Powelled helped fuel the Titans to three sweeps over CCAC opponents last week with two double-doubles, averaging 10.0 assists and 2.89 digs per set. The sophomore also totaled 13 kills with only one error in 21 chances for a .571 attack percentage.
The back-to-back CCAC Setter of the Week’s first double-double came on Thursday, Sept. 12 in a 3-0 victory at Governors State, notching 34 assists and 12 digs. She produced the same number of digs and 30 assists two days later in another three-set sweep against Indiana University Northwest.
Hockstra, Powell and the rest of the Titans are back in action tonight, hosting CCAC foe Judson University at 7 p.m. inside the Student Activities Center.
