ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Josiah Wieland notched his fourth goal of the year and his first game-winner to lift Taylor to a 2-1 victory against Concordia on Monday.
Wieland tallied the 78th-minute goal for TU (3-2) off a cross from James McBride and was able to connect on the header. McBride’s second assist of the year helped the Trojans capture a 2-0 lead in the closing minutes against the Cardinals (2-2).
On the verge of the first half ending, Luke Holwerda netted a left-footed strike from 35 yards out and off the crossbar to put the Trojans up 1-0 with three seconds remaining in the half. The freshman scored his first-career goal in a Taylor uniform off an assist from Jeremiah Rader. Rader tallied his first assist of 2018 and 11th of his career.
In the tightly-contested match, both teams were close in shots, but TU held a 12-11 advantage. Rader and Paul McBride paved the way with three shots and each had one on-goal. Rader tried to open the scoring early, as the senior let off a shot in the third minute that was saved by Concordia.
During the first 45 minutes of play, Taylor had the offensive edge with seven shots and allowed the Cardinals to take two.
Luke Williams was busy in net for the Purple and Gold. The junior faced four shots on goal and saved three of them. Concordia scored in the 83rd minute to make it 2-1. Williams blocked one shot after the goal and two others were errant to seal the win.
Taylor remained undefeated in the series against the Cardinals. Dating back to 2014, TU has won two of the matches by a score of 2-1 and won 1-0 last season.
After three-straight road matches, TU returns to Turner Stadium to play No. 15 Madonna on Friday at 6:00 p.m. to begin a four-match home stand.
