October 2, 2022 – Pairings announced for Girls Volleyball State Tournament
With 398 teams entered, the matchups for the 51st Annual IHSAA Volleyball State Tournament were announced to an online audience via IHSAAtv.org this evening.

Host sites will announce their respective playing schedules this week and the IHSAA will populate the MaxPreps.com tournament brackets that will be linked at IHSAA.org.

Sectional play begins on Tuesday, Oct. 11, and continues through Saturday, Oct. 15, at 64 sites across the four enrollment classifications.

Those sectional champions will advance to a four-team regional on Saturday, Oct. 22, to be followed by a single semi-state round on Saturday, Oct. 29. The four state championship matches at Ball State University’s Worthen Arena are scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 5.

The four top-ranked teams in the latest polls from the Indiana High School Volleyball Coaches Association at
IndianaPrepVolleyball.com headline this year’s field.

The No. 1 Hamilton Southeastern Royals will host Carmel in the Sectional 8 opening round. In Class 3A, the top ranked Providence Pioneers will open tournament action facing Silver Creek in Sectional 30 at Madison Consolidated. The No. 1 Andrean Fighting 59ers, the defending 2A state champions, will host Lake Station Edison in Sectional 33. And in Class lA, the top-ranked Tecumseh Braves will take on Northeast Dubois in the Sectional 64 opening match played at Wood Memorial.

Among the other defending state champions from a year ago, Class 4A’s McCutcheon Mavericks, ranked third overall this week, will host Marion in the Sectional 7 opener. Last year’s 3A state champion, the Brebeuf Jesuit Braves, are now playing in 4A where they are ranked No. 4, drew Southport in Sectional 11hosted by Roncalli. And the Lafayette Central Catholic Knights were last year’s 1A title winners but have moved up to Class 2A and will meet Delphi Community in the Sectional 38 first round at Clinton Prairie.

About the Draw
To conduct the random drawing for the volleyball state tournament, the IHSAA places ping-pong balls representing each school in a sectional into a lottery-style air mix machine. Afan in the bottom of the machine blows the balls around the inside of the transparent container and air then forces each ball up through a tube in random order. For example, the first ball retrieved from the machine will be the visiting team in match one with the second ball representing the home team in match one. The third ball to come out is the visitor in match two and the fourth ball the home team in match two. That same method is followed through all 64 sectionals and 16 regionals.

Schools Entered: 398 schools. 394 matches will be played over the four‐week tournament. By Class: 102 teams in 4A; 102 in 3A, 98 in 2A and; 96 in lA.
