Indianapolis, Truman Garner Season’s First Weekly GLVC Football Honors

 

INDIANAPOLIS – University of Indianapolis senior quarterback TJ Edwards and senior linebacker Alex Parsons, along with Truman State University junior return specialist Lawrence Woods, have picked up the season’s first Great Lakes Valley Conference Player of the Week honors in football, it was announced by the league office Monday.

OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
TJ Edwards, Indianapolis
Sr., QB, Garland, Texas
Team Result: 24-9 win at No. 23 Ashland

Led UIndy to comeback win at in-region No. 23 Ashland, as the Greyhounds scored the final 24 points

Finished 17-for-23 passing for 221 yards and two touchdowns, while netting 27 rush yards on nine carries

Became GLVC’s all-time leader with 80 career passing TDs

Compiled a 183.3 passer rating, averaging 9.6 yards per pass and 13.0 yards per reception

Trailing 9-3 at halftime, he returned to throw for 12-for-15 passing for 178 yards and two touchdowns

Delivered the game’s longest pass with a 59-yard bomb midway through the fourth quarter for what proved to be the game’s final score

Named GLVC Freshman of the Year (2015) and GLVC Offensive Player of the Year (2016) while at Southwest Baptist University

Earns his fifth career Offensive Player of the Week award (9/12/16, 10/3/16, 10/24/16, 10/16/17)

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Alex Parsons, Indianapolis
Sr., LB, Crawfordsville, Indiana

Team Result: 24-9 win at No. 23 Ashland

 

Led a Greyhound defense that held the 23rd-ranked Eagles to single digits in points and zero touchdowns

Affected the game in a number of ways, compiling eight tackles, two tackles for loss, a half sack, an interception and a pass break-up

His timely interception came with six minutes to go as the Eagles faced 2nd & Goal at the UIndy 7-yard line, ending a promising Ashland drive that could have made it a one-possession game

Earns his first career Defensive Player of the Week award

SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Lawrence Woods, Truman State
Jr., KR, St. Louis, Missouri

Team Result: 10-7 win at Drake (FCS)

Notched his fifth career return to set the career Truman record previously held by Mike Laususe (1974-77) and the GLVC record held by William Jewell’s Anthony Mullins (2013-16)

With a 3-0 lead at halftime, he opened the third quarter with an 87-yard scamper to the end zone, in what would be the lone Truman touchdown on the day

Blocked a field goal attempt of 39 yards in the second quarter with Truman up 3-0

Also accounted for a team-high eight total tackles on defense, including seven solo stops, with two coming on punt returns

Earns his third career Special Teams Player of the Week award (9/24/18, 10/8/18)
