Scalia Breaks Single Season 3-Point Record In Win At Wisconsin

MADISON, Wis. – Senior guard Sara Scalia knocked down four 3-pointers as she set the new single season record for 3-pointers made as No. 14 Indiana topped Wisconsin, 68-54, on Wednesday night at Kohl Center.

KEY MOMENTS

  • The two teams traded blows in the first quarter, as Indiana got three-straight triples from graduate student forward Mackenzie Holmes and a pair from Scalia to take a 12-9 lead at the 6:24 mark.  IU’s lead was never more than three in the first as senior guard Chloe Moore-McNeil kept the lead at 17-14 at the four-minute mark, helping her team shoot 4-for-5 from long range in the first.
  • Wisconsin pulled even on a pair at the line but freshman Lenée Beaumont kept the lead for the Hoosiers at the break with one at the line, 20-19. In the second, IU’s defense locked down and held the Badgers to just six second quarter points as it built a 41-25 lead at the half.
  • Indiana used an 11-0 run to create separation in the second, as Scalia knocked down her 78th triple of the season with 4:52 to go, tying the all-time single season school record for 3-pointers made. Beaumont’s drive to the rim and a wide open 3-pointer from Moore-McNeil pushed the lead to 36-23.
  • It was a forgettable third quarter for Indiana, who scored a season-low for a third quarter seven points as Wisconsin pulled within six late in the frame. Scalia’s much needed 3-pointer with 35 ticks pushed her to the new school single season record as IU held the 48-39 lead into the fourth.
  • Back-to-back buckets for Holmes at the rim got Indiana started on the right foot in the final 10 minutes.  She scored the first four buckets for IU as Moore-McNeil connected on two 3-pointers in back-to-back possession to take its largest lead of the game at 20 with 5:45 to go.

 NOTABLE

  • Scalia set the new single season school record for 3-pointers made in the game with xxxx in the victory. She passes Amanda Cahill (2017-18) who hit 78 in 37 games. The Stillwater, Minn. native added 15 points
  • Holmes led the way with her 13th 20-point scoring effort of the season on 24 points and also had a team-high eight rebounds along with a season-high four steals. She has scored in double figures in 23 of 24 games this season.
  • Moore-McNeil chipped in double figures with 12 points on four 3-pointers, as she is now a combined 9-for-9 in her last two games from beyond-the-arc.
  • Bargesser joined Moore-McNeil for a team-high five assists each. IU passed out 17 assists on 24 made buckets.
  • Indiana has now won 10-straight in the series with the Badgers and pulls to a 54-24 lead in the all-time series.
  • As a team, the Hoosiers connected on 10 triples and finished 50 percent from 3-point range on the night.

QUOTABLE

Indiana head coach Teri Moren

“Tonight was a little bit different. We didn’t shoot the ball nearly as well as we had been shooting it. We got rebound, which is a little frustrating, but I thought between Sara (Scalia) and Mack(enzie Holmes) doing some good things throughout the game. I thought Chloe (Moore-McNeil) was really, really good tonight for us. She has just been so important. But road wins are hard and we are obviously happy that we’re getting out of here with a road win. It was an uncharacteristic of a night where we didn’t shoot the ball as well as we’ve been shooting it.”
