IUSB Eyes Roosevelt and Cornerstone Classic

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Indiana University South Bend volleyball hits the road this week for five matches in unfamiliar territory, beginning at Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference opponent Roosevelt on Tuesday, Oct. 8 at 8:00 p.m. (EST). The Titans then head to Grand Rapids, Mich. to participate in the 2019 Cornerstone Classic for four contests on Friday, Oct. 11 and Saturday, Oct. 12.

Titans at a Glance

Indiana University South Bend (11-7, 7-2 CCAC) enters the week after going 2-1 against three conference opponents last week, including a convincing sweep over CCAC leader Trinity Christian on Thursday, Oct. 3 inside the Student Activities Center.

Hot Streak

In their last 12 games, the Titans hold a 10-2 overall record and have gone 7-1 against conference opponents. IUSB has attacked at a .220 rate and have held its opponents to just a .124 clip. IU South Bend has owned almost every statistical category during the hot streak, including total kills (563-468), digs (83-746), assists (513-444), service aces (68-59) and total blocks (81.0-53.5).

Titans in the CCAC

After last week, the Titans find themselves in a four-way tie for second place in the CCAC standings with IU Northwest, Trinity International and Olivet Nazarene. Trinity Christian sits on top with an 8-1 conference record. IUSB ranks first in the CCAC in kills per set (12.5) and assists per set (11.4) while behind the Trolls for digs per set (18.5).

Moving Up in the Record Books

Sophomore McKenzie Powell has 1480 total assists in just 191 sets played, passing Leah Wimmer last weekend for second place in career assists. Last week, Powell led all players in all three contests in total assists, averaging 11.0 per set. The Rolling Prairie, Ind., native notched a career-high 47 assists in the IUSB comeback victory over Cardinal Stritch on Friday, Oct. 4.

Scouting Roosevelt

The Lakers (6-15, 1-8 CCAC) are tied for 12th place with Robert Morris in the conference standings, having lost their last four matches. The lone conference victory came in the conference opener on Sept. 4 against Governors State (3-1). Makenzie Cooper leads the Roosevelt offense with 209 total kills (2.79 per set) while Mallory Nickelson dishes out 5.44 assists per set. Defensively the Lakers average 1.87 blocks per set and grab 12.97 digs per set. The Titans hold a 10-1 advantage in the head-to-head series with a 2-0 record in Chicago, Ill. The only loss occurred back on Oct. 29, 2011 in neutral territory.

2019 Cornerstone Classic

Following Tuesdays, contest IUSB heads to Grand Rapids, Mich. to participate in the 2019 Cornerstone Classic on Friday (10/11) and Saturday (10/12). The Titans face host CU at 4:00 p.m. and Grace College at 6:00 p.m. on Friday before playing Bethel (11:00 a.m.) and RV Lawrence Tech (1:00 p.m.) on Saturday.

Looking Ahead

The Titans conclude the six-game road stint at Saint Xavier on Tuesday, Oct. 15 before finishing the remainder of the 2019 regular-season at home in five of its final eight contests. IU South Bend honors its five seniors on Senior Day, which is slated for Saturday, Oct. 26 as the Titans host Goshen College at 1 p.m.
