SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The Indiana University South Bend softball team split a Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference twin bill with Calumet College of St. Joseph Tuesday, April 13. After taking the first game 4-0, the Crimson Wave broke through senior pitcher Aly Brickel during the seventh frame of the nightcap to seal a 2-1 victory.
The Titans move to 10-13 overall and 3-4 during CCAC play this season.
Game One: IUSB 4, CCSJ 0
Senior Becca Stevens pitched the complete came, yielding just five hits and striking out four Crimson Wave batters to earn her fourth win of the season.
Offensively four different Titans tallied a hit in game one, including a two-run dinger to right field from MacKenzie Myars in the bottom of the sixth to help seal the win. Seniors Savanna Schmitz and Kat Bessler along with junior Brittney Johnstone knocked in the other hits for the Titans.
Schmitz lead the game off with a double down the left field line and eventually was brought home off the CCSJ catcher’s wild throw. Meanwhile Emily Anglin collected an RBI with a ground out to second, driving in Bessler to make the score 2-0.
Both teams went scoreless through the next four complete innings until Myars added the two insurance runs as Schmitz came in off the junior’s seventh bomb of the season.
