Volleyball Drops Home Opener to CCAC Opponent, St. Francis

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – In the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference and the home opener for the Indiana University South Bend volleyball team, the Titans fell to the University of St. Francis (Ill.) by a score of 3-0 (20-25, 18-25, 26-28) on Thursday evening.

After falling in in the first two sets, the Titans looked to take the third set after leading by as many as four halfway through. With the score at 8 apiece, IUSB rallied off four straight points to take a 12-8 advantage. Two Kills from Julie Brown, one kill from Sydney Lubinski and a service ace from Robbie Berg aided the Titan rally.

The Fighting Saints inched closer and tied the set at 23-23. As both teams traded scores back-and-forth in the final few points, USF continued its momentum to take the third and final set, 28-26, giving IUSB its first loss at home this season.

After the loss, the Titans are now 1-3 overall and 0-1 in CCAC play. Inside the Student Activities Center they drop to 41-34 and are now 4-5 in their home opening matches. As a team, IUSB attacked at a .102 while the Fighting Saints held the advantage at .143. Both teams recorded 35 kills while the Titans held a 66-62 advantage in the dig category.

Sophomore McKenzie Powell notched her second double-double of the season with a team-high 15 assists and 12 digs. Junior transfer Hannah Marchand recorded a game-high 11 kills on 25 attempts, attacking at an impressive .320 percentage, in her first outing as a Titan. The Jacksonville transfer was also the lone player on the court to notch double-digit kills.

Senior Berg performed well defensively, collecting a team-high 16 digs to go along with a team high four block assists. Lubinski added eight kills for the Titans and now has 44 on the season in four games.

After the loss, IUSB heads to Livonia, Mich. tomorrow to participate in the Julie Martin Memorial Classic, hosted by Madonna. The Titans will face Madonna at 3:00 p.m. prior to Saint Francis (Ind.) at 5:00 p.m.
