Lady Lancers blitz CCU for eight goals

CINCINNATI, Ohio – Grace’s women’s soccer team put on a goalfest at Cincinnati Christian, winning 8-1 on Thursday.

Five different players scored in Grace’s goal spree, propelling the Lady Lancers (6-1) to an easy victory.

Jenni Phillips and Liz Van Wormer, in particular, were involved heavily for Grace. Phillips scored a goal and added four assists, and Van Wormer notched a hat trick.

The Eagles (0-6) actually got on the scoreboard first against the run of play. CCU saw 11 of the first 13 shots of the match shot on its goal as Grace attacked on offense early.

CCU managed to score an unassisted goal 20 minutes into the match to take the lead, but that incident only seemed to spark Grace to life.

The Lady Lancers responded just seven minutes later. Phillips earned her first assist on Grace’s first goal, setting up Joana Schimmel.

The match remained tied 1-1 at halftime despite Grace holding a tremendous 14-5 shot advantage and 6-0 lead on corner kicks.

Allison Vroon provided the go-ahead goal shortly into the second half, and the proverbial floodgates opened up for Grace’s offense.

Aubrey Feipel scored next, assisted by Phillips again, for Feipel’s first goal since her freshman season.

In the final 15 minutes, Grace added five more. Van Wormer, the former Warsaw Tiger standout, scored her first goal off an assist by Phillips.

Phillips scored a goal of her own two minutes later on a penalty kick; not long after she tallied her fourth assist of the match, again picking out Van Wormer.

Next up Schimmel netted her second goal, and Van Wormer completed her hat trick in the final minutes on a solo effort.

The Lady Lancers have now outscored their opponents 24-4 to start the season. Grace’s offense has showed dramatic improvement in 2018, already surpassing last year’s goal tally of 23 in just seven games.

For the game, Grace outshot CCU 35-8. Vroon, Phillips and Schimmel each had four shots, and Van Wormer led all players with five shots.

Bethany Blackwood earned the win as goalkeeper, making three saves in 90 minutes.

The Lady Lancers return home on Saturday, hosting Lincoln Christian at 7 p.m. at 1st Source Bank Field.
