Lancers top century mark at Great Lakes

LANSING, Mich. – Eddie Gill IV tallied a triple-double to lead Grace’s men’s basketball team over Great Lakes Christian 100-92 on Wednesday.

Gill produced 11 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists in just 24 minutes, marking Grace’s first triple-double in at least 15 years.

The Lancers (11-6) topped the 100-point mark for the fourth time this season thanks to 26 points apiece from Charlie Warner and Haden Deaton.

Wednesday’s game in Michigan proved to be an offensive showcase for both teams. Grace used a 14-3 run to take an early 16-8 lead, but the Crusaders refused to let the Lancers get away.

Grace held a lead for most of the opening half, but the Lancers were unable to fully seize control. The Crusaders (8-7) buried a last-second 3-pointer to take a 48-47 lead going into halftime.

Grace shot 50 percent from the floor in the half but made only 3-of-10 from beyond the arc.

Warner opened the second half with a 3-pointer to put Grace back on top, but the Lancers were unable to build any momentum.

With eight minutes remaining, Deaton and Warner buried back-to-back triples to tie the game at 81-81.

Logan Godfrey was a consistent source of offense in the second half for Grace. He made 7-of-9 shots after halftime for 18 points, and eventually powered the Lancers in front.

With five minutes to play, Godfrey erupted. He scored eight points in less than three minutes, helping Grace to a 92-89 advantage.

The Lancers did not make another field goal for the final 2:50 of regulation, but Grace did not need to. Grace hit eight foul shots over the last minutes, and the Crusaders were held to just one more made field goal.

Warner shot a blistering 10-of-15 from the floor for his 26 points, burying 4-of-7 from the 3-point line. Deaton had a packed statline with 26 points, 8 rebounds, 5 assists and 4 steals.

Godfrey finished with 22 points and six boards, and Gill made 7-of-8 from the foul line en route to his 11-point triple-double.

Martin Schiele did not miss a shot with seven points and three rebounds off the bench, and Braxton Linville added 3 points, 7 assists and 4 boards.

Grace shot 53 percent for the game and also shot 34 free throws. The Crusaders were thoroughly outrebounded 46-23.

The Lancers resume Crossroads League play on Saturday with a home doubleheader. Grace will host No. 5 Mt. Vernon Nazarene at 3 p.m., shortly after the women’s game at the Manahan Orthopaedic Capital Center.
