Ed Gilliland, retired LaPorte athletic director and former member of the IHSAA Board of Directors, has been appointed as an IHSAA Associate Commissioner.
Commissioner Paul Neidig tabbed Gilliland for this newly created part-time position to assist the IHSAA staff in several areas and will begin immediately.
As an IHSAA Associate Commissioner, Gilliland’s work will be focused on the northern half of the state where he will be working with new athletic administrators, providing support for member schools, and assisting with Officials recruitment and retention. Additionally, he will provide support at IHSAA state tournament events, attend member school regular season athletic events, IHSAA Principal meetings, and be available for opportunities to promote the values of education-based athletics.
Gilliland retired this summer after completing 25 years as athletic director at LaPorte High School and serving the last seven years as a member of the IHSAA Executive Committee including as chairman in 2017-18.
“I’m very pleased that Ed Gilliland has accepted this offer to assist the IHSAA,” said Neidig. “He brings a wealth of experience and knowledge from his years in athletic administration and is very well-respected both across the state and nationally. Ed truly understands the importance of education-based athletics which is reflected in the way he has led the athletic program at LaPorte High School over the past 25 years.”
He is a 25-year member of both the Indiana Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association (IIAAA) and the Indianapolis-based National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association (NIAAA) earning honors and recognition from both organizations for his leadership.
A LaPorte native and graduate of LaPorte High School, Gilliland went on to earn bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Ball State University. He and his wife Marie will continue to reside in LaPorte.
