Junior ran second-fastest time in program history to take seventh in enormous Louisville meet
GOSHEN, Ind. — Junior men’s cross country runner Vincent Kibunja is the Maple Leaf Athlete of the Week for the week ending September 30.
Kibunja ran the second-fastest time in Maple Leaf program history on Saturday, clocking in at 24 minutes, 54.6 seconds at the Louisville Sports Commission Classic in Kentucky. He finished seventh out of more than 400 runners on the 4.97-mile course and came within 13 seconds of Ryan Smith’s three-year-old school record. GC finished 32nd as a team, coming in ahead of multiple NCAA Division I programs.
A native of Nakuru, Kenya, Kibunja has been Goshen’s number-one runner in every meet except one since he arrived on campus last year. In 2017, he was an all-Crossroads League runner and an NAIA national qualifier. He has finished in the top seven of every race so far this fall, with Saturday’s run shaving more than 75 seconds off his best collegiate time.
The Maple Leaf Athlete of the Week is selected each week by a panel of Goshen College administrators, coaches, media and faculty.
