Maple Leaf Athlete of the Week (8/20): Jennifer Ritchie

Super sophomore led team in kills, digs over opening weekend

Sophomore women’s volleyball outside hitter Jennifer Ritchie is the Maple Leaf Athlete of the Week for the week ending August 19.

Ritchie paced the Maple Leafs with 27 kills, a .209 hitting percentage and 49 digs last week as Goshen split four matches at the season-opening Cardinal Stritch Invitational. She picked up more than half of those kills in the first match of the event, putting away a career-high 15 winners Friday in a come-from-behind win over Governors State University.

A New Prairie High School graduate, Ritchie ranks 42nd in the NAIA in digs as of Monday morning. Her 3.1 digs per set would have matched last season’s team leader, MacKinnon Tracy. Ritchie averaged 2.66 digs per set last fall, when she was the lone freshman to play in every match.

Goshen hosts Roosevelt University in its home opener at 8 p.m. Tuesday before traveling to the University of Michigan at Dearborn for two matches Friday and two Saturday.

The Maple Leaf Athlete of the Week is selected each week by a panel of Goshen College administrators, coaches, media and faculty.
