Sophomore men’s soccer forward Stuart Aeschliman is the Maple Leaf Athlete of the Week for the week ending August 26.
Aeschliman led the Maple Leafs by scoring three of their five goals in the opening win of the season as the team defeated Holy Cross and lost to top-20 NAIA powers Madonna and Central Methodist. He tied the game against Holy Cross late in the first half on an unassisted goal before giving his team the lead with 10:43 to play. Saturday, Stuart took a pass up the touchline from his older brother Stuart and converted it into GC’s goal with 18 seconds remaining.
A native of Salem, Oregon, the younger Aeschliman ranks 10th in the NAIA with 3 goals this season and 17th with 6 points. He now sports 15 career goals and 6 assists in 21 games after leading the team with 12 scores last fall.
After opening the season with three games in five days last week, the Maple Leafs return to the field on Friday to host 16th-ranked Rio Grande from Ohio. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at the John Ingold Athletic Complex.
The Maple Leaf Athlete of the Week is selected each week by a panel of Goshen College administrators, coaches, media and faculty.
