Senior made career-high 10 saves in pushing top-10 foe to OT Saturday
GOSHEN, Ind. — Senior men’s soccer goalkeeper Johan Escalante is the Maple Leaf Athlete of the Week for the week ending September 23.
Escalante made a career-high 10 saves in his lone appearance of the week, an overtime loss to ninth-ranked Lindsey Wilson College on the road last Saturday. The Blue Raiders took 28 total shots in the game but needed until the 97th minute to break through for the sudden-death winner.
The goal was the first that Escalante has allowed this season in 157 minutes of action; last season, he completed three shutouts and allowed one goal every 83 minutes against a total of 82 saves. The second-team all-conference goalkeeper also posted his 200th career save on Saturday.
Escalante and the Maple Leafs open conference play later this week with a pair of local rivals, visiting Bethel on Wednesday and hosting Grace on Saturday. Both games start at 7 p.m.
The Maple Leaf Athlete of the Week is selected each week by a panel of Goshen College administrators, coaches, media and faculty.
