Maple Leaf Athlete of the Week (9/18): Vincent Kibunja

Sophomore led Maple Leafs to third-place finish in GC debut

GOSHEN, Ind. — Sophomore Vincent Kibunja of the Goshen College men’s cross country team has been named the Maple Leaf Athlete of the Week for the week of September 11-17.

Kibunja, a transfer from Monroe College, started his Goshen career on Friday by leading the team with a 14th-place finish at the Crossroads League preview meet hosted by Marian University. The race took place at Northview Church in Carmel on the same course that will host the CL meet in November.

The Nakuru, Kenya, native becomes the first Goshen runner since 2013 to lead the team in his first career meet. His time of 28 minutes, 17.77 seconds paced the team by more than 15 seconds.

The Maple Leafs enter their first off week of the season having run two meets, combining to defeat 11 teams and defeat four. They return to the course on Saturday, Sept. 30, in the Louisville Sports Commission Cross Country Classic.

The Maple Leaf Athlete of the Week is selected each week by a panel of Goshen College administrators, coaches, media and faculty.
