Maple Leafs to host Movember Night for prostate cancer research on Wednesday

GOSHEN, Ind. — The Goshen College Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and basketball teams are joining forces to raise money for the Prostate Cancer Foundation at Movember Night, set for Wednesday, Dec. 5 in Gunden Gymnasium.

Maple Leaf players, coaches and staff will be donning mustaches in support of prostate cancer awareness and research.

Prostate cancer is the second-most-common type of cancer among American men, affecting one in nine American men in their lifetimes according to National Cancer Institute data. Fans who are able are to encouraged to join the team in recognizing the fight with their follicles by wearing mustaches of their own.

In addition to their upper lip, fans can join in the fight with their upper bodies by purchasing the limited-edition T-shirt pictured above. The garment is $5 and will be available at the gate.

SAAC is also sponsoring a halftime contest to benefit prostate cancer awareness and research. The Dizzy Piñata Swing will offer participants the chance to race from one free throw line to the other and break a piñata, with the winner taking home Maple Leaf athletic apparel as a prize.

Fans will also be able to vote on the best mustaches sported by Maple Leaf team members based on photos available at the gate.

Proceeds from the T-shirts and Dizzy Piñata Swing will be donated to the Prostate Cancer Foundation along with receipts from ticket sales and concession revenue.

The Goshen women will open the evening’s festivities at 6 p.m., squaring off with Grace College in the team’s final home game before Christmas. The men’s game follows at approximately 8 p.m.

The Maple Leafs and Lancers share one of the closest rivalries in the Crossroads League — the 26-mile trip from one school to the other is the fourth-shortest in the league — and have played annually since 1956-57 for a total of 129 meetings in men’s basketball. The women’s series began in 1966 and will have its 77th installment Wednesday.

Both games will be broadcast live on GoLeafs.net/live and 91.1 The Globe, Goshen College’s award-winning campus radio station.
