INDIANAPOLIS – The Marian men’s basketball team earned its second-straight Crossroads League win with an 89-63 victory over Huntington Tuesday night on John Grimes Court in Indianapolis. Marian is 17-4 overall and 6-3 in the league with the win.
The first five minutes of the game belonged to Marian’s Cameron Wolter as the big man wasted no time stuffing the stat sheet. In the first five minutes he piled up six points and six rebounds, while helping Marian to a 13-10 lead at the first media timeout. The two teams traded baskets for much of the half and Marian found themselves up three at the under-eight media timeout. Sterling Brown was the first to double figures, and scored a pair of baskets off steals on the defensive end.
Huntington struggled to control the ball and turned it over nine times in the first 12 minutes of the half, while Marian turned it over just once. From the 11 minute mark to the seven minute mark alone, Marian forced six turnovers, but was unable to pull away from the Foresters during the span. Later in the half, a three-point play from TJ Henderson helped the Knights to a six point lead and they stretched it to nine with 4:41 to play on a layup from Luke Gohmann.
The run continued as Reginald Kissoonlal hammered home a putback jam and Brown, Hayden Langkabel and Gohmann buried three-straight 3-pointers to make it 51-31. The Gohmann three capped a 16-0 run to close the half. Marian shot 51 percent from the field for the half and scored 11 points off Huntington turnovers. Seven Knights scored five points or more in the half.
Marian kept on rolling early in the second half, extending their lead to 25 by the 15 minute mark. Wolter secured a double-double two minutes into the half and Marian never allowed the Foresters back in the game. The Knights cruised to another blowout win and their last three wins have come by an average of 25 points per game.
Brown led Marian with 18 points on 7-of-8 shooting, while Wolter posted 16 points and 12 rebounds. Wes Stowers scored 14 points and dished out eight assists and Henderson and Langkabel added 10 points apiece. The Knights shot 50 percent from the field and held the Foresters to 38 percent shooting. Marian won the rebounding battle 45-30.
Marian will be on the road Saturday as they travel to No. 3 Indiana Wesleyan for a 3 p.m. tipoff.
