MATT’S MATCHUPS – 2017 FOOTBALL (WEEK EIGHT)

It proved to be an average week as I posted a 15-4 (79 percent) record. With just two weeks left in the regular season, my overall record is 121-34, which keeps me at 78 percent.  All games are Friday.

NORTHERN INDIANA CONFERENCE

Adams (1-6) at Washington (3-4) (School Field): The Eagles soared to a 33-13 win over Washington a year ago. Eric Williams’ 20-yard touchdown run was not enough for Adams in a 27-20 loss to Elkhart Central. Donya Harris’ five-yard scoring run was all the Panthers could muster up against Bremen in a 43-7 loss. Matt’s pick: Adams 35, Washington 33.

Bremen (4-3, 2-3 NIC) at Jimtown (3-4, 3-1 NIC): The Lions roared past Jimtown, 34-27, a season ago. Sam Huffman hauled in a 21-yard scoring pass for Bremen against Washington. Clay Campbell ran for a touchdown and returned an interception for another tally in the Jimmies’ 42-20 loss to Riley. Matt’s pick: Bremen 25, Jimtown 23.

Clay (0-7) at Riley (4-3) (Jackson Field): The Wildcats clawed their way to 47-20 win over Clay last season. The Colonials avoided a shutout by scoring a touchdown on the final play of a 58-6 loss to Penn. Jalen Cummings returned a kickoff 85 yards for a score in Riley’s triumph at Jimtown. Matt’s pick: Riley 46, Clay 12.

Elkhart Central (3-4, 1-2 NIC) at Penn (6-1, 3-0 NIC): The Kingsmen cruised to a 48-17 win against Elkhart Central last year. Kyran Pearson tallied a touchdown in the Blazers’ victory over Adams. Brock Zolman had a 57-yard scamper for a score in Penn’s victory at Clay. Matt’s pick: Penn 44, Elkhart Central 10.

Glenn (3-4, 1-3 NIC) at New Prairie (6-1, 4-0 NIC): The Falcons suffered a 50-33 loss to New Prairie in their last meeting. Garrett West accounted for Glenn’s first score with a five-yard run in a 17-0 win over LaVille. Max Mender caught a 31-yard touchdown pass in the Cougars’ 42-0 triumph at Marian. Matt’s pick: New Prairie 40, Glenn 14.

Mishawaka (4-3) at Marian (4-3): The Knights are looking to make amends for a 26-14 setback at Mishawaka in 2016. Chris Harness had a one-yard run for a score in the Cavemen’s 27-25 loss at Saint Joseph. Michael Hemmingway managed just two catches for eight yards for Marian against New Prairie. Matt’s pick: Mishawaka 31, Marian 27.

Saint Joseph (3-4) at Culver Academy (6-1): The Indians marched past Culver Academy, 22-6, a season ago. Drew Sutton tossed a touchdown pass for Saint Joseph against Mishawaka. Michael Bocker threw for a pair of scores and ran for another in the Eagles’ 40-6 win at Indianapolis Howe. Matt’s pick: Saint Joseph 21, Culver Academy 20.

NORTHERN LAKES CONFERENCE

Elkhart Memorial (1-6, (0-5 NLC) at Wawasee (1-6, 0-5 NLC): The Warriors rolled to a 33-14 victory over Elkhart Memorial a year ago. Andrew Goodman hauled in a 68-yard scoring pass for the Chargers in their 65-14 loss to NorthWood. Jesse Landeros returned an interception for a touchdown in the Warriors’ 35-13 loss at Warsaw. Matt’s pick: Wawasee 32, Elkhart Memorial 29.

Goshen (1-6, 1-4 NLC) at Plymouth (5-2, 3-2 NLC): The RedHawks slipped past Plymouth, 7-2, a season ago. Dominick Sweeney was responsible for Goshen’s first score with a 46-interception return in a 29-26 loss at Northridge. Benji Nixon rambled for 93 yards in the Rockies’ 17-0 loss to Concord. Matt’s pick: Plymouth 34, Goshen 15.

Northridge (7-0, 5-0 NLC) at Concord (7-0, 5-0 NLC): The Raiders dropped a 31-19 contest to Concord last season. Nick Hooley tossed a pair of touchdowns pass for Northridge against Goshen. Brady Reed recorded a pair of quarterback sacks for the Minutemen against Plymouth. Matt’s pick: Concord 26, Northridge 24.

NorthWood (5-2, 3-2 NLC) at Warsaw (4-3, 3-2 NLC): The Tigers came up on the short end of 61-24 decision to NorthWood last year. Brayton Yoder tallied 90 yards on the ground and two scores for the Panthers against Elkhart Memorial. Tristan Larsh ran for 197 yards and three touchdowns and threw a pass for another score for Warsaw against Wawasee. Matt’s pick: NorthWood 39, Warsaw 18.

HOOSIER NORTH CONFERENCE

Caston (1-6, 0-5 HNC) at Winamac (3-4, 1-4 HNC): The Cavaliers claimed a 35-0 triumph against Caston in their last matchup. Brady Hartman ran for 96 yards and a score in the Comets’ 45-21 loss to Culver. Kyle Chumley had 93 yards on the ground and one touchdown for Winamac in its 37-14 win at West Central. Matt’s pick: Winamac 25, Caston 9.

LaVille (3-4, 2-3 HNC) at North Judson (2-5, 1-4 HNC): The Bluejays were blanked 48-0 by LaVille in 2016. Edgar Albarado had an interception for the Lancers against Glenn. Fletcher Greer scampered for 92 yards and a score in North Judson’s 36-8 loss to Triton. Matt’s pick: LaVille 19, North Judson 17.

Pioneer (7-0, 5-0 HNC) at Culver (5-2, 3-2 HNC): The Panthers clawed their way to 48-14 win over Culver last year. Daniel Gregorich rambled for 76 yards and a score in Pioneer’s 28-7 win over Knox. Lance Keller came up with an 85-yard interception return for a touchdown in the Cavaliers’ triumph at Caston. Matt’s pick: Pioneer 41, Culver 16.

Triton (5-2, 4-1 HNC) at Knox (6-1, 4-1 HNC): The Redskins needed three overtimes to come away with a 34-33 win over Triton a year ago. Max Slusser had 45 yards rushing with a score in the Trojans victory over North Judson. Dawson Patrick had a touchdown pass for Knox against Pioneer. Matt’s pick: Knox 37, Triton 22.

DUNELAND CONFERENCE

Crown Point (4-3, 3-2 DAC) at Chesterton (3-4, 1-4 DAC): The Bulldogs earned a 28-0 win against Chesterton last season. Ryan Bolda tossed for 122 yards with a touchdown in Crown Point’s 37-25 win against LaPorte. Louie Razo raced for 119 yards and a score in the Trojans’ 42-24 win over Lake Central. Matt’s pick: Crown Point 28, Chesterton 20.

Michigan City (5-2, 4-1 DAC) at LaPorte (4-3, 3-2 DAC): The Slicers got by Michigan City, 42-35, a season ago. Zennon Wilhelm caught a 34-yard touchdown pass in the Wolves’ 31-14 victory against Portage. Isaac Alexander rushed for 104 yards in LaPorte’s setback to Crown Point. Matt’s pick: Michigan City 39, LaPorte 37.

Merrillville (1-6, 1-4 DAC) at Lake Central (1-6, 0-5 DAC): The Indians recorded a 23-7 victory against Merrillville last year. Justin Rhodes managed just 23 yards rushing for the Pirates in their 28-0 loss to Valparaiso. Josh Williams scampered for 193 yards and two touchdowns for Lake Central against Chesterton. Matt’s pick: Merrillville 25, Lake Central 21.

Valparaiso (6-1, 4-1 DAC) at Portage (4-3, 4-1 DAC): The Vikings fell 24-20 to Portage in their previous meeting. C. J. Opperman threw for 65 yards and a touchdown in Valparaiso’s shutout of Merrillville. Greg Milledge hauled in 23-yard scoring strike for the Indians against Michigan City. Matt’s pick: Valparaiso 24, Portage 19.
