MATT’S MATCHUPS 2018 FOOTBALL – SECTIONAL SEMIFINALS

The post-season opened on a good note as I went 17-4 (81 percent) last week. This leaves my overall record at 165-50, which now has me at 77 percent for the year.

CLASS 6A SECTIONAL 1

Portage (4-5) at Crown Point (3-6): The Indians edged Crown Point, 14-12, on September 14. Trey Sebban racked up five catches for 73 yards and two touchdowns in Portage’s 22-19 loss to LaPorte. Ethan Potosky registered 10 tackles for the Bulldogs in their 48-0 loss at Michigan City. Matt’s pick: Portage 18, Crown Point 12.

Merrillville (6-3) at Lake Central (2-7): The Pirates downed Lake Central, 31-14, on October 5. Darius Schultz ran two yards for a score in Merrillville’s 28-16 win over Chesterton. Sir Felix Garcia carried the ball 15 times for 100 yards in the Indians’ 48-14 loss to Valparaiso. Matt’s pick: Merrillville 37, Lake Central 14.

SECTIONAL 2

Chesterton (3-6) at Valparaiso (7-2): The Trojans were blanked by Valparaiso, 23-0, on September 14. Sunny Chohan hauled in a two-yard pass for a touchdown for Chesterton against Merrillville. C.J. Opperman went 7-of-10 115 yards and two scores for the Vikings against Lake Central. Matt’s pick: Valparaiso 24, Chesterton 7.

Warsaw (7-2) at Penn (7-2): The Kingsmen celebrated a sectional crown last season with a 40-0 triumph over Warsaw. Kane Dawson registered 10 carries for 96 yards for the Tigers in a 45-3 win over Concord. George Ohlson caught seven passes for 94 yards in Penn’s 49-42 overtime loss to Mishawaka. Matt’s pick: Penn 31, Warsaw 13.

SECTIONAL 3

Fort Wayne Snider (7-2) at Carroll (Fort Wayne) (3-6): The Chargers claimed a 38-14 win over Fort Wayne Snider on August 24. Lenny Bennett ran 12 times for 69 yards and a touchdown in the Panthers’ 33-14 win over Fort Wayne Bishop Luers. Rhett Saylor had 26 carries for 91 yards and a score for Carroll in a 14-13 loss to Fort Wayne Wayne. Matt’s pick: Fort Wayne Snider 33, Carroll 10.

Homestead (6-3) at Fort Wayne Northrop (3-6): The Spartans marched past Fort Wayne Northrop, 45-28, on August 17. Jake Archbold rambled 12 times for 150 yards and two touchdowns in Homestead’s 29-0 blanking of Fort Wayne South. Davieun Berry caught three passes for 106 yards with a score in the Bruins’ 40-13 loss to Fort Wayne Bishop Dwenger. Matt’s pick: Homestead 31, Fort Wayne Northrop 15.

SECTIONAL 4

Westfield (4-5) at Carmel (7-2): The Greyhounds raced past Westfield, 21-7, in the 2009 sectional opener. Eli Patchett carried the ball 17 times for 95 yards in the Shamrocks’ 44-16 win over Franklin Central. Spencer Hanna booted field goals of 36, 30, and 20 yards in Carmel’s 16-14 win over Lawrence Central. Matt’s pick: Carmel 30, Westfield 9.

Noblesville (4-5) at Lafayette Jeff (8-1): The Millers marched to a 24-13 victory over Lafayette Jeff during the 2013 campaign. Grant Gremel was 7-of-21 for 66 yards and a score in Nobleville’s 14-7 loss to Avon. Thomas Hogan scampered six times for 115 yards and a touchdown in the Bronchos’ 46-0 blanking of Indianapolis Tech. Matt’s pick: Lafayette Jeff 32, Noblesville 16.

CLASS 5A SECTIONAL 9

LaPorte (3-6) at Adams (3-6) (TCU School Field): The Slicers eliminated Adams from last year’s tournament with a 40-19 victory in the sectional semifinals. Jeramiah Ruiz scampered 12 times for 75 yards and a touchdown for LaPorte against Portage. Ira Armstead had 25 rushes for 133 yards and two scores for the Eagles in their 36-12 loss to Saint Joseph. Matt’s pick: Adams 35, LaPorte 23.

Munster (2-7) at Michigan City (7-2): The Wolves roared to a 28-14 win over Munster a season ago in the sectional semifinals. Jelani Warner came up with nine tackles for the Mustangs in their 20-13 win over Kankakee Valley. Michael Bradford had a 29-yard reception for a score for Michigan City against Crown Point. Matt’s pick: Michigan City 45, Munster 10.

SECTIONAL 10

Goshen (1-8) at Elkhart Central (5-5): The Blazers stormed past Goshen, 52-6, on August 24. Drew Marlow racked up seven tackles for the RedHawks in their 13-10 loss to Wawasee. Laz Miller had a pair of fumble recoveries for Elkhart Central in its 46-22 win over Fort Wayne North. Matt’s pick: Elkhart Central 45, Goshen 9.

Concord (4-5) at Elkhart Memorial (3-6): The Chargers are looking to make amends for a 31-27 loss to Concord on August 24. Julius James had three catches for 25 yards for the Minutemen against Warsaw. Tyler Lehner was 5-of-7 for 73 yards and a score in Elkhart Memorial’s 34-0 win over Northridge. Matt’s pick: Elkhart Memorial 29, Concord 28.

SECTIONAL 11

Kokomo (4-5) at McCutcheon (6-3): The Mavericks soared to a 24-13 win over Kokomo on September 7. Steven Edwards had three receptions for 111 yards and two touchdowns in the Wildkats’ 56-16 win over Richmond. Garrett Maish raced 17 times for 213 yards and three scores in McCutcheon’s 48-16 win over Anderson. Matt’s pick: McCutcheon 25, Kokomo 22.

Huntington North (4-5) at Harrison (West Lafayette) (4-5): The Raiders slipped past Huntington North, 25-22, during the 2014 season. Logan Hippensteel recorded 42 carries for 148 yards in the Vikings’ 21-14 win over New Haven. Omarion Dixon carried the ball 16 times for 56 yards in Harrison’s 14-11 loss to Marion. Matt’s pick: Harrison 36, Huntington North 21.

SECTIONAL 12 

New Palestine (9-0) at Zionsville (6-4): The Eagles upset New Palestine, 26-24, in last season’s sectional finale. Charlie Spegal racked up 16 carries for 387 yards and seven touchdowns in the Dragons’ 84-13 win over Delta. Josh Wagner went 17-of-18 for 157 yards with three scores and ran for another tally in Zionsville’s 52-0 victory over Muncie Central. Matt’s pick: New Palestine 48, Zionsville 22.

Greenfield-Central (0-9) at Anderson (2-7): The Indians were a 35-12 winner over Greenfield-Central during the 1990 season. Lance McKee accumulated 21 carries for 68 yards in the Cougars’ 28-0 loss to New Castle. Malachi Qualls racked up six catches for 55 yards for Anderson against McCutcheon. Matt’s pick: Anderson 39, Greenfield-Central 6.

CLASS 4A SECTIONAL 17

East Chicago Central (6-4) at Hammond Morton (8-2): The Cardinals are looking to make amends for a 56-9 loss to Hammond Morton on October 5. Christian Luevano has completed 33-of-84 passes for 571 yards and six touchdowns for East Chicago Central, which eliminated Hammond, 28-12. Eric Johnson ran 22 times for 125 yards and three scores in the Governors’ 55-20 win over Hammond Gavit. Matt’s pick: Hammond Morton 41, East Chicago Central 19.

Griffith (8-2) at Lowell (8-2): The Red Devils captured the sectional crown last season with a 42-7 win over Griffith. Sean McSmith returned a kickoff 76 yards for a score in the Panthers’ 53-0 blanking of Gary West. Ethan Igras was 5-of-10 for 182 yards and ran 10 times for 58 yards and a touchdown in Lowell’s 34-14 win at Highland. Matt’s pick: Lowell 23, Griffith 8.

SECTIONAL 18

New Prairie (7-3) at Saint Joseph (6-4): The Cougars earned a 41-28 win at Saint Joseph on September 7. Jackson Hakes had a four-yard interception return for a score in New Prairie’s 56-7 win over Washington. Mark Hiestand came up with a fumble recovery for the Indians in their 38-12 win over Kankakee Valley. Matt’s pick: New Prairie 38, Saint Joseph 34.

Riley (6-4) at Mishawaka (9-1): The Cavemen cruised to a 55-20 win over Riley during the 2014 campaign. Jalen Cummings ran 17 times for 170 yards and two scores in the Wildcats’ 40-6 triumph over Clay. Joe Willis had an interception in Mishawaka’s 35-7 win at Hobart. Matt’s pick: Mishawaka 40, Riley 13.

SECTIONAL 19

NorthWood (10-0) at East Noble (9-1): The Panthers claimed a sectional crown in 2016 with a 52-24 win at East Noble. Nate Newcomer scampered for 111 yards and a score in NorthWood’s 40-7 victory over Plymouth. Jacob VanGorder recorded 16 tackles in the Knights’ 33-32 win over DeKalb. Matt’s pick: NorthWood 34, East Noble 24.

Northridge (5-5) at Angola (10-0): The Raiders opened the 2012 playoffs with an 18-13 win over Angola. Aidan Berger hauled in a 34-yard touchdown catch in Northridge’s 33-12 win at Wawasee. Eric Cockroft connected on field goals of 25 yards and 35 yards in the Hornets’ 27-7 win at Culver Academy. Matt’s pick: Angola 46, Northridge 18.

CLASS 3A SECTIONAL 25

Hanover Central (5-5) at Andrean (9-1): The 59ers blanked Hanover Central, 24-0, on August 24. Brett Driscoll rambled 19 times for 93 yards and two touchdowns in the Wildcats’ 34-14 win over Wheeler. Ryan Walsh accounted for three rushes for 113 yards and two scores in Andrean’s 49-0 win over Benton Central. Matt’s pick: Andrean 47, Hanover Central 11.

Twin Lakes (5-5) at West Lafayette (10-0): The Indians suffered a 56-13 loss to West Lafayette on October 5. Zion Cosgray tallied nine carries for 151 yards and two touchdowns for Twin Lakes in a 49-8 win over Hammond Clark. R.J. Erb hauled in nine passes for 110 yards with a score in the Red Devils’ 43-12 win over Calumet. Matt’s pick: West Lafayette 49, Twin Lakes 13.

SECTIONAL 27

Tippecanoe Valley (6-4) at Maconaquah (8-2): The Vikings and Maconaquah are meeting for the first time on the gridiron. Jasten Snapp racked up 16 tackles in Tippecanoe Valley’s 34-7 win over Peru. Paxton Kintner caught a 44-yard touchdown pass in the Braves’ 48-13 win over Glenn. Matt’s pick: Maconaquah 28, Tippecanoe Valley 15.

Knox (7-3) at Marian (6-4): The Knights downed Knox, 17-13, in last season’s sectional semifinals. Zac Rose was 3-of-5 for 90 yards and a touchdown in the Redskins’ 21-14 win at Jimtown. Mitchell Nagy had 14 carries for 66 yards and a score in Marian’s 42-7 win at Fairfield. Matt’s pick: Marian 17, Knox 12.

CLASS 2A SECTIONAL 33

Lake Station (0-8) at Boone Grove (8-2): The Wolves rolled past Lake Station, 63-0, on September 7. Joey Kroledge ran seven times for 28 yards in the Fighting Eagles’ 55-0 loss to Griffith. Monsoor Adisa rambled nine times for 158 yards and three touchdowns in Boone Grove’s 71-20 victory over Bowman Academy. Matt’s pick: Boone Grove 50, Lake Station 7.

Gary Roosevelt (4-6) at Whiting (10-0): The Oilers cruised to a 59-14 win over Gary Roosevelt in the 2015 sectional semifinals. The Panthers tallied 22 points in the second quarter of their 46-34 win over River Forest. Nino Barbosa accumulated 21 rushes for 245 yards and two touchdowns in Whiting’s 34-7 win over North Newton. Matt’s pick: Whiting 52, Gary Roosevelt 6.

SECTIONAL 34

Bremen (8-2) at Central Noble (7-3): The Cougars registered a 28-10 win over Bremen in the 2002 sectional opener. Nathan Mullen had a one-yard scoring run in the Lions’ 35-27 win over Woodlan. Noah Christopher scampered five yards for a touchdown in Central Noble’s 30-22 win over Wabash. Matt’s pick: Bremen 26, Central Noble 19.

Prairie Heights (2-8) at Bluffton (6-4): The Panthers are taking on Bluffton for the first time on the football field. Ryan Rasler ran 10 times for 84 yards and two touchdowns in Prairie Heights’ 28-22 win over Whitko. Evan Kitt racked up 13 tackles for the Tigers in their 35-0 blanking of Manchester. Matt’s pick: Bluffton 42, Prairie Heights 8.

CLASS 1A SECTIONAL 41

Triton (7-3) at Winamac (5-5): The Trojans marched past Winamac, 36-20, on October 12. Ethan Berry raced nine times for 64 yards in Triton’s 34-12 win over Culver. Kyle Chumley rambled seven times for 62 yards and a score in the Warriors’ 38-16 win over Caston. Matt’s pick: Triton 22, Winamac 10.

North Judson (5-5) at South Central (3-7): The Satellites are looking to make amends for a 27-22 loss to North Judson in the 2016 sectional semifinals. Manual Barnes had a 31-yard interception return for a touchdown in the Bluejays’ 21-6 win at LaVille. Jackson Meloy tallied 156 yards on the ground and two scores in South Central’s 50-30 win over West Central. Matt’s pick: North Judson 25, South Central 21.

SECTIONAL 42

Pioneer (10-0) at Carroll (Flora) (4-6): The Panthers opened the 2017 post-season with a 55-21 win over Carroll (Flora). Addai Lewellen carried the ball three times for 81 yards and three scores in Pioneer’s 86-0 blanking of South Newton. Quinton Veach recorded nine catches for 136 yards and a touchdown in the Cougars’ 21-14 win over Frontier. Matt’s pick: Pioneer 56, Carroll (Flora) 15.

Lafayette Central Catholic (4-6) at Tri-County (7-3): The Knights came away with a 35-28 win over Tri-County in last season sectional opener. David Schwartz had eight receptions for 108 yards and two scores in Lafayette Central Catholic’s 50-0 win over North White. Kale Lawson scampered 39 times for 324 yards and five touchdowns in the Cavaliers’ 46-27 win over North Miami. Matt’s pick: Lafayette Central Catholic 20, Tri-County 19.
