MATT’S MATCHUPS 2018 FOOTBALL – WEEK NINE

A little more progress was made as I went 15-4 (79 percent) a week ago. Heading into the final week of the regular season, my overall record is now 132-43, which keeps me at 75 percent for the year.

NORTHERN INDIANA CONFERENCE

NORTH DIVISION

Adams (3-5, 0-4 NIC) at Saint Joseph (4-4, 1-3 NIC): The Indians came up on the short end of a 19-14 decision to Adams last year. Jaydin Miller ran for 68 yards for the Eagles in their 28-7 win over Washington. Conor Ratigan caught a 61-yard touchdown pass for Saint Joseph in a 14-11 loss to Culver Academy. Matt’s pick: Saint Joseph 21, Adams 20.

Elkhart Central (4-4, 1-3 NIC) at New Prairie (5-3, 2-2 NIC): This will be the first time the Blazers and New Prairie are playing football. Kyran Pearson had 16 catches for 185 yards and a score for Elkhart Central in a 20-17 loss to Penn. Ian Skornog raced 49 yards for a touchdown for the Cougars in a 35-13 win over Riley. Matt’s pick: New Prairie 33, Elkhart Central 22.

Mishawaka (7-1, 4-0 NIC) at Penn (7-0, 4-0 NIC): The Kingsmen claimed the 2017 NIC North title with a 48-7 win at Mishawaka. Brad Taylor caught a seven-yard touchdown pass for the Cavemen in a 35-17 win over Marian. Ron Powlus was 8-of-17 for 178 yards and two scores for Penn against Elkhart Central. Matt’s pick: Penn 31, Mishawaka 27.

SOUTH DIVISION

Bremen (7-1) at Culver Academy (5-2): The Eagles flew past Bremen, 40-14, last season. Sam Huffman had a six-yard reception for a touchdown in the Lions’ 35-28 loss to Jimtown. Jordon Freeman caught a 65-yard pass for a score for Culver Academy against Saint Joseph. Matt’s pick: Culver Academy 24, Bremen 23.

Clay (0-7, 0-5 NIC) at Jimtown (4-4, 3-2 NIC): The Colonials posted a 39-13 win over Jimtown during the 1964 season. Austin DeLonis racked up eight stops for Clay in a 51-0 loss to Glenn. Jared Lyle hauled in a 55-yard reception for a touchdown for the Jimmies against Bremen. Matt’s pick: Jimtown 42, Clay 6.

Glenn (1-7, 1-4 NIC) at Riley (4-4, 3-2 NIC) (Jackson Field): The Wildcats clawed past Glenn, 48-7, a year ago. Sam Bishop came up with an interception for the Falcons against Clay. Jalen Jennings had a 90-yard kickoff return for a score for Riley against New Prairie. Matt’s pick: Riley 41, Glenn 12.

Marian (4-4, 4-1 NIC) at Washington (3-5, 2-3 NIC) (TCU School Field): The Knights crowned Washington, 25-7, in their last meeting. Mitchell Floran tallied four receptions for 67 yards for Marian against Mishawaka. Kenyon Grant scampered 11 yards for a touchdown for the Panthers against Adams. Matt’s pick: Marian 35, Washington 16.

NORTHERN LAKES CONFERENCE

Elkhart Memorial (2-6, 2-4 NLC) at Northridge (4-4, 3-3 NLC): The Raiders edged Elkhart Memorial, 28-21, last year. Breydan Weston had a one-yard scoring run for the Chargers in a 45-32 win over Wawasee. Dominic Crowder ran 14 yards for a touchdown and returned an interception 60 yards for another tally in Northridge’s 31-21 loss to Concord. Matt’s pick: Northridge 30, Elkhart Memorial 23.

Concord (4-4, 4-2 NLC) at Warsaw (6-2, 4-2 NLC): The Minutemen got past Warsaw, 26-20, a season ago. Roemello Moon scampered 26 yards for a score for Concord against Northridge. Wyatt Amiss had a 16-yard touchdown down catch for the Tigers in their 14-13 loss at NorthWood. Matt’s pick: Warsaw 25, Concord 17.

Goshen (1-7, 0-6 NLC) at Wawasee (0-8, 0-6 NLC): The RedHawks were blanked 20-0 by Wawasee last season. Ricardo Vargas booted a 31-yard field goal for Goshen in its 49-31 loss to Plymouth. Steven Hauntz had two catches for 116 yards and two scores for the Warriors against Elkhart Memorial. Matt’s pick: Wawasee 39, Goshen 19.

NorthWood (8-0. 6-0 NLC) at Plymouth (6-2, 5-1 NLC): The Panthers clawed their way to a 30-6 win over Plymouth in 2017. Jaden Miller had a two-yard scoring run for NorthWood against Warsaw. Seth Rundell racked up four receptions for 147 yards and two touchdowns for the Rockies against Goshen. Matt’s pick: NorthWood 32, Plymouth 30.

DUNELAND CONFERENCE

Crown Point (3-5, 3-3 DAC) at Michigan City (6-2, 5-1 DAC): The Wolves slipped by Crown Point, 17-15, last season. Scott Mills found the end zone twice for the Bulldogs in a 17-14 loss to Chesterton. Justin Wozniak caught a 22-yard touchdown pass for Michigan City in its 52-8 win over LaPorte. Matt’s pick: Michigan City 43, Crown Point 21.

LaPorte (2-6, 2-4 DAC) at Portage (4-4, 3-3 DAC): The Slicers got by Portage, 36-33, a year ago. Jeremiah Ruiz had an eight-yard touchdown run for LaPorte against Michigan City. Ezra Lewellen hauled in two receptions for 56 yards and a score in the Indians’ 17-7 loss to Valparaiso. Matt’s pick: Portage 28, LaPorte 13.

Merrillville (5-3, 4-2 DAC) at Chesterton (3-5, 2-4 DAC): The Trojans posted a 14-7 win over Merrillville a season ago. Armani Glass registered three catches for 114 yards and two scores in the Pirates’ 31-14 win over Lake Central. Chris Mullen went 12-of-23 for 181 yards and two touchdowns for Chesterton against Crown Point. Matt’s pick: Merrillville 26, Chesterton 14.

Valparaiso (6-2, 6-0 DAC) at Lake Central (2-6, 0-6 DAC): The Vikings won the DAC crown last year with a 42-8 victory over Lake Central. Jackson Kurth accumulated 20 carries for 120 yards for Valparaiso against Portage. Deshaun Fort accumulated three catches for 112 yards for the Indians against Merrillville. Matt’s pick: Valparaiso 22, Lake Central 10.

HOOSIER NORTH CONFERENCE

Caston (0-8, 0-6 HNC) at Knox (5-3, 4-2 HNC): The Comets suffered a 31-6 loss to Knox in their last meeting. Sam Smith ran eight times for 110 yards and a score in Caston’s 61-16 loss to Winamac. Jared Prater had eight rushes for 41 yards in the Redskins’ 14-12 loss to Triton. Matt’s pick: Knox 34, Caston 8.

LaVille (5-3, 4-2 HNC) at Culver (2-6, 1-5 HNC): The Lancers earned a pair of victories against Culver in 2017 by scores of 17-10 and 19-16. Andrew Dill tallied six carries for 61 yards and two touchdowns in LaVille’s 27-0 blanking of North Judson. Jalin King carried the ball eight times for 33 yards for the Cavaliers in a 72-0 loss to Pioneer. Matt’s pick: LaVille 36, Culver 18.

Pioneer (8-0, 6-0 HNC) at North Judson (4-4, 3-3 HNC): The Panthers blanked North Judson, 42-0, a season ago. Ezra Lewellen recorded two catches for 56 yards and a score for Pioneer against Culver. Fletcher Greer scampered 19 times for 64 yards for the Bluejays against LaVille. Matt’s pick: Pioneer 49, North Judson 11.

Winamac (4-4, 2-4 HNC) at Triton (5-3, 4-2 HNC): The Trojans marched past Winamac twice last year by counts of 36-19 and 48-29. Hayden Clark rushed the ball 11 times for 75 yards with a score for the Warriors against Caston. Delano Shumpert racked up five carries for 53 yards for Triton against Knox. Matt’s pick: Triton 23. Winamac 19.
