MATT’S MATCHUPS 2019 FOOTBALL – WEEK FIVE

Things went much better last week as I posted a 14-2 (88 percent) mark. Heading into the midway point of the season, my overall record is now 56-18, which improves me to 76 percent.

NORTHERN INDIANA CONFERENCE

NORTH DIVISION

Adams (0-4, 0-1 NIC) at Penn (1-3): The Kingsmen used a strong second half to down Adams, 48-14, a year ago. Ira Armstead had a four-yard touchdown run in the Eagles’ 43-7 loss at Mishawaka. Kyle Riffle scampered 13 times for 116 yards and a score in Penn’s 37-7 loss to Cincinnati St. Xavier. Matt’s pick: Penn 28, Adams 14.

Elkhart Central (4-0) at Saint Joseph (0-4, 0-1 NIC): The Indians edged Elkhart Central, 29-27, last season. Isaiah Chandler was 6-of-10 for 57 yards in the Blazers’ 41-0 blanking of Benton Harbor (Michigan). Matt Eck completed 17-of-29 for 226 yards and three touchdowns in Saint Joseph’s 55-28 loss to New Prairie. Matt’s pick: Elkhart Central 40, Saint Joseph 20.

New Prairie (4-0, 1-0 NIC) at Mishawaka (3-1, 1-0 NIC): The Cavemen slipped past New Prairie, 27-21, last year. Chris Mays raced 19 times for 244 yards and three touchdowns for New Prairie against Saint Joseph. Ethan Fowler ran for 69 yards and two scores for Mishawaka against Adams. Matt’s pick: New Prairie 37, Mishawaka 34.

SOUTH DIVISION

Clay (1-3, 0-2 NIC) at Bremen (1-3, 0-2 NIC): The Lions roared past Clay, 56-7, a season ago. Jamon Miller came up with a 49-yard touchdown catch for the Colonials in their 40-12 loss to Washington. Bryce Wogomon scampered 17 times for 125 yards and a score in Bremen’s 27-6 win at Triton. Matt’s pick: Bremen 30, Clay 13.

Glenn (1-3) at Knox (4-0): The Redskins got past Glenn, 14-8, in their last meeting. Sam Thomas drilled a 24-yard field goal in the Falcons’ 28-3 loss at Jimtown. Ja’Kobe Dickson returned a kickoff 90 yards for a touchdown in Knox’s 35-7 win over North Judson. Matt’s pick: Knox 22, Glenn 9.

Marian (4-0, 3-0 NIC) at Jimtown (2-2, 2-0 NIC): The Knights were a 24-7 winner over Jimtown last season. Zach Wooley hauled in a 28-yard scoring reception in Marian’s 48-14 win over Riley. Cole Thompson accounted for two touchdown runs for the Jimmies against Glenn. Matt’s pick: Marian 33, Jimtown 17.

Riley (3-1, 1-1 NIC) at Washington (3-1, 1-1 NIC) (TCU School Field): The Wildcats cruised to a 44-22 victory over Washington last year. Chris White caught a 26-yard touchdown pass for Riley against Marian. Kenyon Grant tallied an 87-yard scoring run for the Panthers against Clay. Matt’s pick: Riley 29, Washington 19.

NORTHERN LAKES CONFERENCE

Concord (4-0, 3-0 NLC) at Goshen (1-3, 0-2 NLC): The Redhawks suffered a 34-9 loss to Concord a year ago. Dante Reed had a 38-yard scoring catch for the Minutemen in their 43-7 win at Wawasee. Drew Worthman recorded 11 rushes for 41 yards in Goshen’s 55-7 loss at NorthWood. Matt’s pick: Concord 44, Goshen 10.

Northridge (3-1, 1-1 NLC) at Warsaw (3-1, 1-1 NLC): The Tigers rolled to a 37-14 win at Northridge in 2018. Dominic Crowder registered 22 carries for 152 yards and a score in the Raiders’ 35-17 loss at Plymouth. Blake Marsh accounted for a 39-yard touchdown run for Warsaw in its 38-35 win at Elkhart Memorial. Matt’s pick: Warsaw 36, Northridge 32.

Plymouth (3-1, 2-0 NLC) at Elkhart Memorial (1-3, 1-2 NLC): The Rockies needed overtime to claim a 29-28 win over Elkhart Memorial a season ago. Jake Reichard accounted for a two-yard touchdown reception for Plymouth against Northridge. Tyler Lehner went 18-of-22 for 362 yards and five scores for the Chargers against Warsaw. Matt’s pick: Plymouth 43, Elkhart Memorial 21.

Wawasee (1-3, 0-2 NLC) at NorthWood (2-2, 1-1 NLC): The Panthers clawed their way to a 51-13 victory against Wawasee in their previous meeting. Parker Young tossed a 64-yard touchdown pass for the Warriors against Concord. Ben Mestach racked up two catches for 69 yards and a score for NorthWood against Goshen. Matt’s pick: NorthWood 45, Wawasee 8.

DUNELAND CONFERENCE

Crown Point (2-2, 1-1 DAC) at Portage (1-3, 0-2 DAC): The Indians came away with a 14-12 win against Crown Point in the regular season, while the Bulldogs got a 12-7 victory over Portage in the Class 6A sectional semifinal. Matt Walters raced for 169 yards, including a 99-yard touchdown in the Bulldogs’ 10-0 blanking of Lake Central. Scott Hansen had a 14-yard scoring catch for Portage in their 46-7 loss to Merrillville. Matt’s pick: Crown Point 25, Portage 15.

Lake Central (2-2, 1-1 DAC) at LaPorte (0-4, 0-2 DAC): The Slicers carved up Lake Central, 28-13, last season. Jarred Ivey racked up 14 tackles for the Indians against Crown Point. Justin Forker took an interception back 75 yards for a score in LaPorte’s 29-7 loss at Chesterton. Matt’s pick: Lake Central 27, LaPorte 24.

Merrillville (4-0, 2-0 DAC) at Michigan City (2-2, 1-1 DAC): The Wolves rambled to a 42-21 win over Merrillville a year ago. Peter Rodriguez rumbled 12 times for 106 yards and two scores for the Pirates against Portage. Gio Laurent was 10-of-21 for 139 yards and two touchdowns in Michigan City’s 42-21 loss at Valparaiso. Matt’s pick: Merrillville 38, Michigan City 36.

Valparaiso (4-0, 2-0 DAC) at Chesterton (3-1, 2-0 DAC): The Vikings raced to a pair of wins against Chesterton in 2018 by scores of 23-0 and 55-7. C.J. Opperman completed 8-of-16 for 152 yards and a touchdown for Valparaiso against Michigan City. Ben Slatcoff accounted for a pair of scoring receptions for the Trojans against LaPorte. Matt’s pick: Valparaiso 34, Chesterton 14.
