Some progress was made as I went 13-4 (76 percent) last week. As the regular season approaches the midway point, my overall record is now 42-16, which has me at 72 percent for the season.



Adams (0-3) at Mishawaka (2-1): The No. 10 (Class 5A) Cavemen cruised to a 51-27 win over Adams a year ago. Sidney Jeffries hauled in a 35-yard touchdown pass in the Eagles’ 20-19 loss to Riley. Brandon Pierson ran 10 yards for a score in Mishawaka’s 40-0 blanking of Gary West. Matt’s pick: Mishawaka 35, Adams 21.

Benton Harbor (1-1) at Elkhart Central (3-0): The No. 7 (Class 5A) Blazers stormed past Benton Harbor, 35-12 a season ago. Eric Johnson ran 18 times for 140 yards in the Michigan-based Tigers’ 26-20 win over Ottawa Hills. Kennath Davis had five rushes for 71 yards and a touchdown in Elkhart Central’s 36-7 win over Jimtown. Matt’s pick: Elkhart Central 37, Benton Harbor 13

Cincinnati Saint Xavier (2-0) at Penn (1-2): The Ohio-based Bombers and Kingsmen are meeting for the first time on the football field. Matthew Rueve completed 26-of-56 for 243 yards and five touchdowns for Saint Xavier in its 21-14 win Colerain (Ohio). Alec Hardrict had eight carries for 12 yards in Penn’s 35-7 loss to Homewood-Flossmoor (Illinois). Matt’s pick: Saint Xavier 38, Penn 14.

Saint Joseph (0-3) at New Prairie (3-0): The Indians downed No. 3 (Class 4A) New Prairie, 42-30, in the sectional semifinals, while the Cougars earned a 41-28 win over Saint Joseph in the regular season. Patrick Driscoll recorded an interception in Saint Joe’s 41-0 loss at Marian. Brandon Kasinger came up with 11 tackles in New Prairie’s 33-10 win over Andrean. Matt’s pick: New Prairie 41, Saint Joseph 16.


Bremen (0-3) at Triton (2-1): The Lions roared to 49-7 victory over Triton last season. Ethan Nunemaker was 8-of-14 for 145 yards in Bremen’s 35-12 loss to Glenn. Connor Pitney went 11-of-17 for 222 yards and two touchdowns in the Trojans’ 41-0 trouncing of Caston. Matt’s pick: Triton 23, Bremen 10.

Clay (1-2, 0-2 NIC) at Washington (2-1, 0-1 NIC) (TCU School Field): The Panthers roared to a 57-10 win against Clay in their last meeting. Jalen Pigee raced for 52 yards in the Colonials’ 14-8 win over Hammond. Devon Briggs hauled in a 12-yard touchdown catch in Washington’s 14-7 win at Kankakee Valley. Matt’s pick: Washington 29, Clay 7.

Glenn (1-2, 1-1 NIC) at Jimtown (1-2, 1-0 NIC): The Jimmies posted a 27-10 win over Glenn last year. Brandon Godette came up with an interception for the Falcons against Bremen. Cole Thompson carried the ball 14 times for 74 yards for Jimtown against Elkhart Central. Matt’s pick: Jimtown 31, Glenn 9.

Marian (3-0, 2-0 NIC) at Riley (3-0, 1-0 NIC): The No. 6 (Class 3A) Knights crowned Riley, 21-13, in the 2018 campaign. Mitchell Floran caught a pair of touchdown passes for Marian against Saint Joseph. Senator Brown went 12-of-19 for 214 yards and two scores for the Wildcats against Adams. Matt’s pick: Marian 24, Riley 17.


Concord (3-0, 2-0 NLC) at Wawasee (1-2, 0-1 NLC): The No. 5 (Class 5A) Minutemen cruised to a 49-28 win against Wawasee last season. Ariel De La Paz booted a 50-yard field goal and three extra-points in Concord’s 24-14 win over NorthWood. Parker Young threw for 41 yards in the Warriors’ 27-0 loss to Northridge. Matt’s pick: Concord 42, Wawasee 8.

Goshen (1-2, 0-1 NLC) at NorthWood (1-2, 0-1 NLC): The RedHawks suffered a 43-19 loss to NorthWood a season ago. Bryant Grewe had 11 carries for 21 yards in Goshen’s 48-0 loss to Elkhart Memorial. Jaden Miller ran for a touchdown and caught a pass for another tally for the Panthers against Concord. Matt’s pick: NorthWood 40, Goshen 6.

Northridge (3-0, 1-0 NLC) at Plymouth (2-1, 1-0 NLC): The Raiders held on for a 37-34 win over No. 10 (Class 4A) Plymouth last year. Caid Lacey raced 27 times for 219 yards and three scores for Northridge against Wawasee. Ivan Winkle rambled nine times for 123 yards and a score in the Rockies’ 24-19 win at Warsaw. Matt’s pick: Plymouth 33, Northridge 30.

Warsaw (2-1, 0-1 NLC) at Elkhart Memorial (1-2, 1-1 NLC): The Tigers edged Elkhart Memorial, 14-7, a year ago. Luke Adamiec had an interception for Warsaw against Plymouth. Derrick Woods had 17 rushes for 117 yards with a touchdown for the Chargers against Goshen. Matt’s pick: Warsaw 17, Elkhart Memorial 7


Crown Point (1-2, 0-1 DAC) at Lake Central (2-1, 1-0 DAC): The Bulldogs were a 21-3 winner over Lake Central in their last contest. Tysen Cazy had a six-yard scoring reception in Crown Point’s 27-24 overtime loss to Merrillville. Sir Felix Garcia scampered 23 times for 185 yards and three touchdowns in the Indians’ 30-21 win over Portage. Matt’s pick: Lake Central 29, Crown Point 26.

LaPorte (0-3, 0-1 DAC) at Chesterton (2-1, 0-1 DAC): The Slicers claimed a 29-14 win against Chesterton last year. Jeremiah Ruiz ran 11 times for 78 yards in LaPorte’s 35-0 loss to Valparaiso. Ryan Klepies ran 14 yards for a score for the Trojans in their 21-7 loss at Michigan City. Matt’s pick: Chesteton 20, LaPorte 15.

Michigan City (2-1, 1-0 DAC) at Valparaiso (3-0, 1-0 DAC): The No. 3 (Class 5A) Vikings downed No. 8 (Class 5A) Michigan City, 14-7, a season ago. Michael Bradford tallied 10 rushes for 28 yards with a score for the Wolves against Chesterton. Antonio Orsorio rushed six times for 65 yards and two touchdowns for Valparaiso against LaPorte. Matt’s pick: Valparaiso 13, Michigan City 10.

Portage (1-2, 0-1 DAC) at Merrillville (3-0, 1-0 DAC): The Pirates blanked Portage, 39-0, a year ago. Jakar Gordon rambled 85 yards for a score for the Indians against Lake Central. Jeremiah Howard had the game-winning 16-yard touchdown reception for Merrillville against Crown Point. Matt’s pick: Merrillville 25, Portage 12.
