I am hoping the third time is the charm after going 14-6 (70 percent) last week. My overall mark is now 29-12, which keeps me at 71 percent for the season.



Andrean (1-1) at New Prairie (2-0): The No. 9 (Class 2A) 59ers rolled to a 44-28 win over No. 3 (Class 4A) New Prairie a season ago. Ryan Walsh rambled 19 times for 302 yards and five touchdowns in Andrean’s 44-23 win over Hanover Central. Chase Ketterer has 19 carries for 121 yards and two scores in the Cougars’ 62-7 win over Clay. Matt’s pick: New Prairie 36, Andrean 28.

Gary West (1-1) at Mishawaka (1-1): The Cougars and Cavemen are meeting for the first time on the gridiron. Despite tallying 12 points in the first quarter, Gary West still came up on the short end a 27-26 decision to Crispus Attucks. Drew Mason had a five-yard scoring run for Mishawaka in a 34-29 loss at East Noble. Matt’s pick: Mishawaka 43, Gary West 12.

Homewood Flossmoor (Ill.) (1-0) at Penn (1-1): This marks the first contest in football between the Vikings and Kingsmen. Sean Allen rambled 50 yards for a touchdown in Homewood Flossmoor’s 54-20 victory over Thornton Fractional North. Nick Favilla came up with a pair of touchdown catches for Penn in a 33-6 win against LaPorte. Matt’s pick: Homewood Flossmoor 31, Penn 14.

Jimtown (1-1) at Elkhart Central (2-0): The Jimmies claimed a 42-20 victory over No. 7 (Class 5A) Elkhart Central in the 2016 campaign Tony Pletcher came up with a fumble recovery in the end zone in Jimtown’s 31-13 win over Washington. Elijah Harris converted a 29-yard field goal in the Blazers’ 31-3 win at Goshen. Matt’s pick: Elkhart Central 34, Jimtown 20.

Riley (2-0) at Adams (0-2) (TCU School Field): The Eagles soared to a 46-12 win over Riley last year. Jalen Cummings scampered for 100 yards and two scores in the Wildcats’ 28-7 win over Bremen. Coming off a 42-13 loss at GlenOak (Ohio), Adams is trying to avoid its first 0-3 start since 2017. Matt’s pick: Riley 40, Adams 35.


Glenn (0-2, 0-1 NIC) at Bremen (0-2, 0-1 NIC): The Lions clubbed Glenn, 49-14, a year ago. Garrett West accounted for five carries for 108 yards and a score in the Falcons’ 49-7 loss to Marian. Ethan Nunemaker was 12-of-23 for 103 yards and a touchdown for Bremen against Riley. Matt’s pick: Bremen 32, Glenn 6.

Hammond (0-2) at Clay (0-2): Since last year’s matchup was canceled because of the weather, the Wildcats and Colonials are now playing for the first time. Dante Densmore ran 10 times for 49 yards and two touchdowns in Hammond’s 34-18 loss to Burbank Reavis (Ill.). Jamon Gordon accounted for Clay’s lone score against New Prairie with an 88-yard kickoff return. Matt’s pick: Clay 15, Hammond 13.

Saint Joseph (0-2) at Marian (2-0): The Indians slipped by No. 6 (Class 3A) Marian, 7-6, last season. Patrick Driscoll had a 50-yard scoring reception for Saint Joseph in a 31-16 loss to Northridge. Mitchell Floran had five receptions for 57 yards and a touchdown for the Knights against Glenn. Matt’s pick: Marian 24, Saint Joseph 16.

Washington (1-1) at Kankakee Valley (1-1): The Kougars held on for a 23-20 win over Washington in 2018. Ta’Ron Ramos raced 18 times for 116 yards for the Panthers against Jimtown. Nathan Swafford tallied 39 carries for 241 yards and four touchdowns in Kankakee Valley’s 35-21 win over Wheeler. Matt’s pick: Kankakee Valley 30, Washington 15.


Elkhart Memorial (0-2, 0-1 NLC) at Goshen (1-1): The Chargers marched past Goshen 49-24, last season. Breydon Weston amassed nine carries for 16 yards in Elkhart Memorial’s 31-18 loss at Concord. Drew Wortham had nine rushes for 26 yards for the RedHawks against Elkhart Central. Matt’s pick: Elkhart Memorial 38, Goshen 14.

NorthWood (1-1) at Concord (2-0, 1-0 NLC): The No. 9 (Class 4A) Panthers clawed their way to a 29-20 win against No. 5 (Class 5A) Concord in their last meeting. Jaden Miller racked up 12 carries for 45 yards in NorthWood’s 48-21 loss to No. 1 (Class 3A) Indianapolis Bishop Chatard. Amarion Moore caught four passes for 79 yards with three scores for the Minutemen against Elkhart Memorial. Matt’s pick: Concord 28, NorthWood 23.

Plymouth (1-1) at Warsaw (2-0): The Rockies needed overtime to earn a 32-29 win over Warsaw a season ago. Joe Barron completed 24-of-45 passes for 274 yards and four scores in Plymouth’s 41-20 win over Kokomo. Harrison Mevis converted the game-winning 51-yardd field goal in the Tigers; 20-19 win at Michigan City. Matt’s pick: Warsaw 33, Plymouth 29.

Wawasee (1-1) at Northridge (2-0): The Warriors came up on the short end of a 27-6 decision to Northridge last year. Parker Young threw a 62-yard touchdown strike in Wawasee’s 21-6 loss to West Noble. Oliver Eveler was 12-of-22 for 162 yards with a score for the Raiders against Saint Joseph. Matt’s pick: Northridge 41, Wawasee 10.


Chesterton (2-0) at Michigan City (1-1): The No. 8 (Class 5A) Wolves roared to a 28-10 win over Chesterton a year ago. Ben Slatcoff caught two touchdowns passes for the Trojans in their 40-0 blanking of Munster. Jonathon Flemings ran for 85 yards and three scores for Michigan City against Warsaw. Matt’s pick: Michigan City 40, Chesterton 22.

Merrillville (2-0) at Crown Point (1-1): The Pirates won the regular season meeting over Crown Point, 26-21, last season, but the Bulldogs rebounded for 17-13 triumph over Merrillville to earn their third straight Class 6A sectional title. Khris Walton registered four tackles in Merrillville’s 21-0 win over Hobart. Jacob Woods had eight stops for Crown Point in a 24-0 blanking of Highland. Matt’s pick: Merrillville 25, Crown Point 18.

Portage (1-1) at Lake Central (1-1): The Indians of Portage downed Lake Central, 18-10, last season. Jaylynn Gohlson carried the ball nine times for 35 yards and a score in Portage’s 35-9 win over Lowell. Sir Felix Garcia rambled 15 times for 87 yards in the Indians’ 20-0 loss to Hammond Morton. Matt’s pick: Portage 27, Lake Central 21.

Valparaiso (2-0) at LaPorte (0-2): The No. 3 (Class 5A) Vikings cruised to a 38-7 win against LaPorte a season ago. Matt Tomczak raced three times for 29 yards and two scores in Valparaiso’s 56-0 win over Griffith. Collin Bernquist had 14 carries for 97 yards on the ground and also caught a 20-yard touchdown pass for the Slicers against Penn. Matt’s pick: Valparaiso 44, LaPorte 13.
