The 2019 campaign opened on a sour note as a I went 15-6 (71 percent) last week.



Adams (0-1) at GlenOak (Ohio) (1-9 in 2018): These teams are playing football for the first time. Miguel Zynkiewicz caught seven passes for 120 yards with two touchdowns and ran for another tally in the Eagles’ 35-34 loss to Northridge. The Golden Eagles allowed 40 or more points five times a year ago.  Beau Balderson replaced Scott Gaicia as GlenOak’s top man, Matt’s pick: Adams 39, GlenOak 17.

Clay (0-1) at New Prairie (1-0): The No. 5 (Class 4A) Cougars blanked Clay, 55-0, last season. Jalen Pigee accounted for 26 yards rushing for the Colonials in their 51-0 loss to Marian. Chris Mays scampered for 103 yards and three scores for New Prairie in a 48-14 win over LaPorte. Matt’s pick: New Prairie 51, Clay 6.

Elkhart Central (1-0) at Goshen (1-0): The No. 10 (Class 5A) Blazers posted a pair of wins over Goshen in 2018 by counts of 52-6 and 19-0. Isaiah Chandler completed 11-of-18 for 107 yards for Elkhart Central in a 41-21 win over Elkhart Memorial in the final battle for the Mangy Lion. Wesley VanHooser had six receptions for 39 yards in the RedHawks’ 20-14 win over Fairfield. Matt’s pick: Elkhart Central 36, Goshen 10.

LaPorte (0-1) at Penn (0-1): The Kingsmen earned a Class 6A sectional crown in 2016 with a 42-21 win over LaPorte. Robbie Kiner was just 2-of-4 passing for 62 yards for the Slicers against New Prairie. Kyle Riffel rushed the ball 19 times for 60 yards and a touchdown for Penn in its 34-14 loss to Valparaiso. Matt’s pick: Penn 31, LaPorte 7.

Saint Joseph (0-1) at Northridge (1-0): The Raiders are looking to make amends for a 10-0 loss at Saint Joseph. Evan Price completed 13-of-19 attempts for 119 yards in the Indians’ 17-14 loss to Concord. Breckin Judd hauled in a pair of touchdown passes for Northridge against Adams. Matt’s pick: Saint Joseph 21, Northridge 13.

Mishawaka (1-0) at East Noble (1-0): This marks the first time these clubs are meeting on the gridiron. In addition to throwing a touchdown pass, Justin Fisher also carried the ball 20 times for 128 yards with two scores for the No. 7 (Class 5A) Cavemen in their 42-27 win over Portage. Gage Ernsberger had six catches for 51 yards and a touchdown for the Knights in a 34-31 victory at Plymouth. Matt’s pick: Mishawaka 23, East Noble 20.


Bremen (0-1) at Riley (1-0) (Jackson Field): The Lions roared past Riley, 42-12, a year ago.Brady Ginter tallied 16 rushes for 52 yards in Bremen’s 27-7 win over LaVille. Jalen Cummings accounted for 64 yards on the ground and two touchdowns on 20 carries in the Wildcats’ 28-27 overtime win at New Haven. Matt’s pick: Riley 35, Bremen 12.

Jimtown (0-1) at Washington (1-0) (TCU School Field): The Jimmies marched past Washington, 35-0, a season ago. Clay Campbell went 11-of-20 for 175 yards and two scores in Jimtown’s 35-21 loss to NorthWood. Taron Ramos accounted for a score in the Panthers’ 21-0 blanking of Hammond. Washington will honor its 1969 state championship team prior to the contest. Matt’s pick: Jimtown 22, Washington 11.

Marian (1-0, 1-0 NIC) at Glenn (0-1): The No. 6 (Class 3A) Knights crowned Glenn 28-7, last year. Maddix Bogunia scampered for three touchdowns for Marian against Clay. John Drews returned an interception 92 yards for a score in the Falcons’ 42-21 loss to Boone Grove. Matt’s pick: Marian 44, Glenn 8.


Elkhart Memorial (0-1) at Concord (1-0): The No. 9 (Class 5A) Minutemen slipped past Elkhart Memorial twice a year ago by scores of 31-27 and 28-20. Derrick Woods tallied a 76-yard touchdown run for the Chargers against Elkhart Central. Jack D’Arcy had five receptions for 92 yards for Concord against Saint Joseph. Matt’s pick: Concord 33, Elkhart Memorial 14.

Indianapolis Bishop Chatard (1-0) at NorthWood (1-0): The No. 4 (Class 4A) Panthers claimed the 2005 Class 3A state title with a 7-0 blanking of top-ranked Bishop Chatard. Kyle Cheek was 12-of-17 for 194 yards and two scores in the Trojans’ 49-14 win over Brebeuf Jesuit. Veshon Malone rambled eight times for 52 yards for NorthWood against Jimtown. Matt’s pick: Bishop Chatard 30, NorthWood 16.

Kokomo (0-1) at Plymouth (0-1): The Rockies rolled to a 35-19 win over Kokomo in their previous meeting. Andres Begne completed 9-of14 for 97 yards and a touchdown in the Wildkats’ 63-13 loss to top-ranked and defending Class 5A state champion New Palestine. Jake Reichard caught nine passes for 129 yards and a score for Plymouth against East Noble. Matt’s pick: Plymouth 38, Kokomo 19.

Warsaw (1-0) at Michigan City (1-0): These two clubs are playing on the football field for the first time. Wyatt Amiss rushed the ball 11 times for 93 yards and two scores in the Tigers’ 52-13 victory over Huntington North. Jonathan Flemings tallied 89 yards rushing and four touchdowns in the No. 5 (Class 5A) Wolves’ 60-7 win over Griffith. Matt’s pick: Michigan City 36, Warsaw 21.

Wawasee (1-0) at West Noble (1-0): The Chargers earned a 27-7 win over Wawasee last year. Ethan Garza accounted for two scores in the Warriors’ 28-14 win over Lakeland. Brandon Pruitt scampered 35 yards for touchdown in West Noble’s 19-7 victory against Central Noble. Matt’s pick: Matt’s pick: West Noble 25, Wawasee 10.


Hammond Morton (0-1) at Lake Central (1-0): The Indians downed Hammond Morton, 33-13, a season ago. Paris Hewlett had 12 carries for 61 yards in the Governors’ 19-18 setback to Highland. Mateo Cedano was 12-of-20 for 199 yards and two scores in Lake Central’s 37-7 win over Munster. Matt’s pick: Lake Central 32, Hammond Morton 26.

Highland (1-0) at Crown Point (1-0): The Bulldogs edged Highland, 14-10, a year ago. Christian Rios returned a fumble 35 yards for a score for the Trojans against Hammond Morton. Will Pettit went 23-of-38 for 336 yards and scores in Crown Point’s 21-19 loss to Lowell. Matt’s pick: Crown Point 34, Highland 19.

Hobart (0-1) at Merrillville (1-0): The Pirates came up with an 18-11 win over Hobart during the 2002 campaign. D.J. Lipke tallied a one-yard scoring run in the Brickies’ 21-13 loss to Chesterton. Jeremiah Howard hauled in five passes for 89 yards and two touchdowns in Merrillville’s 48-20 win over No. 8 (Class 2A) Andrean. Matt’s pick: Merrillville 37, Hobart 21.

Lowell (1-0) at Portage (0-1): The Indians surprised No. 8 (Class 4A) Lowell, 7-3, last year. Cameron Stojancevich finished 7-of-10 for 171 yards with three scores for the Red Devils against Crown Point. Isaac Hegwood racked up 26 yards on the ground for Portage against Mishawaka. Matt’s pick: Lowell 18, Portage 15.

Munster (0-1) at Chesterton (1-0): The Trojans blanked Munster, 31-0, last season. Noah Poole accounted for a 46-yard touchdown reception for the Mustangs against Lake Central. Chris Mullen was 15-of-27 for 291 yards with three scores for Chesterton against Hobart. Matt’s pick: Chesterton 40, Munster 9.

Valparaiso (1-0) at Griffith (0-1): The No. 4 (Class 5A) Vikings claimed a 34-21 win against Griffith in the 2010 season. Liam Shepherd booted a pair of field goals and four extra-points for Valparaiso against Penn. Robert Gordon scampered 61 yards for a score for the Panthers against Michigan City. Matt’s pick: Valparaiso 45, Griffith 11.
