January closed on a sour note as I went 17-6 (74 percent) last week. Heading into the final month of the regular season, my overall record is 166-41, which keeps me at 81 percent.


Concord (5-6) at LaPorte (3-12): The Slicers came up with a 59-47 win over Concord a year ago. Anthony Trudell managed two points in the Minutemen’s 77-40 loss to Elkhart. Grant Ott-Large poured in 21 points for LaPorte in a 50-39 loss against Warsaw. Matt’s pick: Concord 53, LaPorte 52.


Jimtown (3-11) at Elkhart Christian (6-6): The Jimmies held on for a 46-41 win over Elkhart Christian last season. Johntu Reed managed 13 points in Jimtown’s 68-53 loss to Elkhart. Noah Hunt had 14 points in the Eagles’ 65-54 loss to Triton. Matt’s pick: Elkhart Christian 50, Jimtown 47.

Penn (5-8, 2-4 NIC) at Clay (3-13, 1-6 NIC): The Kingsmen earned a 72-59 win over Clay last year. DelRontay Haywood chipped in two points in Penn’s 56-47 win at Goshen. Johnny Watson’s four points lifted the Colonials to a 63-45 win over Bremen. Matt’s pick: Penn 62, Clay 53.

Washington (3-10, 2-5 NIC) at Glenn (12-3, 3-3 NIC): The Panthers roared past Glenn, 83-70, a season ago. Jawan Agnew added six points in Washington’s 50-44 loss to Crown Point. Carter Yung tallied 22 points in the Falcons’ 64-47 loss to No. 5 (Class 4A) Adams. Matt’s pick: Glenn 64, Washington 56.


Clay (3-14, 1-7 NIC) at Saint Joseph (10-3, 5-2 NIC): The Colonials came up on the short end of an 89-51 decision to No. 8 (Class 3A) Saint Joseph last year. Kylan Perry notched 10 points for Clay in its 63-43 loss to Penn. J.R. Konieczny tallied 26 points in the Indians’ 59-58 loss at New Prairie. Matt’s pick: Saint Joseph 84, Clay 61.

Concord (6-6, 3-1 NLC) at NorthWood (9-4, 3-2 NLC): The Panthers clawed their way to a 47-25 win over Concord a year ago. Jack D’Arcy accounted for the game-winning bucket in the Minutemen’s 47-45 win over LaPorte. Ben Bontrager was limited to one point in NorthWood’s 47-42 loss at Warsaw. Matt’s pick: NorthWood 57, Concord 50.

Jimtown (4-11, 1-6 NIC) at Adams (15-1, 7-0 NIC): The No. 6 (Class 4A) Eagles flew past Jimtown, 62-55, in their previous meeting. Luke Bottom had eight points in the Jimmies’ 77-71 win over Elkhart Christian. Jessie Morgan scored nine points for Adams against Glenn. Matt’s pick: Adams 74, Jimtown 51.

Marian (12-2, 5-2 NIC) at Bremen (7-7, 2-4 NIC): The No. 5  (Class 3A) Knights crowned Bremen, 73-36, a season ago. Jaxon Hundt recorded four points in Marian’s 76-54 win over Fort Wayne Bishop Luers. Ty Feldman registered two points for the Lions against Clay. Matt’s pick: Marian 72, Bremen 56.

Mishawaka (10-1, 4-0 NLC) at Warsaw (10-7, 4-1 NLC): The Tigers claimed a 75-69 win over Mishawaka during the 1988-89 season. DaVonn Parker chipped in four points for the Cavemen in a 53-48 win over Goshen. Russ Winchester tallied two points for Warsaw against NorthWood. Matt’s pick: Mishawaka 64, Warsaw 57.

New Prairie (12-5, 4-3 NIC) at Elkhart (9-9, 3-5 NIC): Hunter Smith accounted for the game-winning points for the Cougars against Saint Joseph. Damarion Anderson racked up 12 points for the Lions against Jimtown. Matt’s pick: New Prairie 55, Elkhart 54.

Riley (12-4, 6-1 NIC) at Washington (3-11, 2-6 NIC): The Panthers needed overtime to claim a 73-67 win over Riley last season. Tyson Lee accounted for two points in the Wildcats’ 78-54 win over Penn. Jason Dockery managed just two points for Washington in a 58-39 loss against Marian. Matt’s pick: Riley 79, Washington 59.


Chesterton (14-2) at Warsaw (11-7): The Tigers rolled to a 76-57 win over Chesterton in the 1991-92 season. Travis Grayson came up with 17 points in the Trojans’ 62-51 win at Michigan City. Judah Simfukwe had 25 points and nine rebounds in Warsaw’s 64-50 win over Mishawaka. Matt’s pick: Chesterton 55, Warsaw 51.

Glenn (13-3, 4-4 NIC) at Penn (6-8, 3-4 NIC): The Kingsmen posted a 67-53 win over Glenn during the 2019-20 campaign. Silas Kaser chipped in 15 points in the Falcons’ 63-43 win over Washington. Caleb Applegate tallied 18 points for Penn against Clay. Matt’s pick: Glenn 61, Penn 58.

Jimtown (4-12) at Northridge (10-4): The Jimmies dropped a 49-43 contest to Northridge a year ago. Beau Barhams scored five points in Jimtown’s 56-27 loss at Adams. Caden Mack added six points for Northridge in its 89-49 win over Plymouth. Matt’s pick: Northridge 60, Jimtown 48.

Michigan City (11-4) at Adams (16-1): The Eagles claimed a 56-52 win over Michigan City in the 2020 Class 4A Michigan City sectional semifinals. Justin Sims accounted for nine points for the Wolves against Chesterton. Brayden Saxton finished with 14 points for Adams against Jimtown. Matt’s pick: Adams 82, Michigan City 73.

Mishawaka (10-2, 4-1 NLC) at Concord (7-6. 4-1 NLC): The Cavemen edged Concord, 48-40, a season ago. Sacario Thomas added 12 points for Mishawaka against Warsaw. Payton Fish scored 21 points for the Minutemen in a 72-67 overtime win at NorthWood. Matt’s pick: Mishawaka 59, Concord 57.

Washington (3-12) at East Noble (7-9): The Knights downed a 57-52 win over Washington in the 1997 Elkhart regional final. Terrence Reid mustered two points in the Panthers’ 68-58 loss to Fort Wayne North, Chris Hood came up with 19 points in East Noble’s 38-36 loss to Bellmont. Matt’s pick: East Noble 43, Washington 35.

Wawasee (7-7) at Manchester (7-5): The Squires coasted to a 61-50 win against Wawasee last year. Kam Salazar poured in 14 points in the Warriors’ 55-46 win at Lakeland. Maddox Zolman netted 22 points in Manchester’s 58-56 loss to Fort Wayne Concordia. Matt’s pick: Manchester 46, Wawasee 40.

Westview (12-3) at Plymouth (2-14): The No. 10 (Class 2A) Warriors earned a 67-42 win over Plymouth last season. Brady Yoder tallied 16 points in Westview’s 60-56 overtime win at West Noble. Easton Strain netted 13 points for the Pilgrims at Northridge. Matt’s pick: Westview 64, Plymouth 49.
