Another year of high school basketball gets going this week and I am hoping to improve on last year’s record of 266-81, which was good for 77 percent for the 2019-20 campaign. Records are from last year unless indicated.


LaPorte (10-13) at Riley (12-11): The Wildcats edged LaPorte, 70-66, a year ago. Ales Daniel replaces Andre Owens as the top man at Riley. Grant Ott-Large tallied 327 points last season for the Slicers. Notre Dame recruit Blake Wesley accumulated 597 points for Riley. Matt’s pick: Riley 74, LaPorte 59.


Bremen (6-18) at Argos (16-9): The Lions clawed past Argos, 60-42, last season. Matt Miller takes over for Jerry Smith at Bremen.  Carson Miller came up with 299 points for the Lions last year. Michael Richard helped the Dragons to a Class 1A sectional crown with 136 points. Matt’s pick: Bremen 39, Argos 38.

Glenn (14-9) at Plymouth (6-17): The Falcons soared to a 64-45 win over Plymouth last year. Carter Yung racked up 267 points for Glenn. Jake Reichard netted 352 points for the Pilgrims a year ago. Matt’s pick: Glenn 54, Plymouth 51.

Indianapolis Shortridge (4-20) at Warsaw (13-10): Drew Fountain takes over for Jeff Strange at Shortridge. Matt Moore replaces Doug Ogle as the Tigers’ leader. Will Smith is one of the standouts for the Blue Devils. Luke Adamiec accounted for 189 points for Warsaw. Matt’s pick: Warsaw 59, Shortridge 44.


Columbia City (1-0) at Warsaw (1-0): The Tigers clawed past Columbia City, 55-48, last year. Mason Baker netted 15 points in the Eagles’ 47-44 win over Whitko. Jason Gould piled up 10 points in Warsaw’s 63-43 win over Indianapolis Shortridge. Former Jimtown boss Matt Schauss is now the top man at Columbia City. Matt’s pick: Warsaw 58, Columbia City 51.

Fort Wayne Concordia (12-12) at NorthWood (18-6): The Cadets are making their first visit to the Panther Pit to battle NorthWood. Luke Speckhard averaged 2.9 points per game for Fort Wayne Concordia. Ben Vincent recorded 215 points for the Class 3A sectional champion Panthers. Matt’s pick: NorthWood 61, Fort Wayne Concordia 56.

Northridge (21-5) at Westview (1-0): The Warriors edged defending Class 4A sectional champ Northridge, 59-58, in their previous meeting. Carter Stoltzfus poured in 13.5 points per contest for the Raiders. Drew Litwiller poured in 21 points in Westview’s 77-25 win over Bethany Christian. Ed Bentley replaced Rob Yoder as the main man for the Warriors. Matt’s pick: Northridge 53, Westview 50.

Penn (10-14) at Carroll (Fort Wayne) (1-0): The Chargers marched past Penn, 66-50, a year ago. Casey Shultz came up with 88 points last season for the Kingsmen. Jalen Jackson tallied 19 points and 11 rebounds in Carroll’s 67-37 win over Norwell. Matt’s pick: Carroll 62, Penn 54.

Plymouth (0-1) at New Prairie (13-13): The Pilgrims suffered a 46-29 loss to New Prairie a season ago. Nolan Bales came up with 11 points in Plymouth’s 53-41 loss to Glenn. Braydon Flagg came up with 13.7 points per contest for the Cougars. Matt’s pick: New Prairie 43, Plymouth 40.

Washington (14-10) at Lake Central (14-12); The Indians slipped past Washington, 58-56, last season. Jason Jones managed 7.1 points per game for the Panthers. Nate Oakley scored 6.8 points a contest for Lake Central. Matt’s pick: Lake Central 65, Washington 59.

Wawasee (14-10) at Angola (14-9): The Hornets flew past Wawasee, 45-36, during the 2019-20 campaign. Keaton Dukes mustered 277 points per game for the Warriors. Jacksyn Nafziger is one of the leaders for Angola. Brandon Appleton moves from the Hornets’ girls program to the boys’ squad. Matt’s pick: Angola 44, Wawasee 41.
