The 2020 portion of the schedule ended on a solid note as I went 27-6 (82 percent) last week. Heading into the first week of 2021, my overall record is 89-20, which keeps me at 82 percent for the season.


Clay (1-7, 0-2 NIC) at Glenn (5-0): The Falcons soared to a 75-61 win over Clay last year. Brad Hicks notched nine points in the Colonials’ 70-44 win over Westville. Carter Yung tallied 16 points in Glenn’s 51-46 overtime win over East Noble. Matt’s pick: Glenn 64, Clay 54.

Elkhart (4-4) at Mishawaka (2-1):  The Cavemen suffered a 68-58 loss to Elkhart during the 1971-72 campaign. Donovan Johnson added 10 points in the Lions’ 66-65 loss to Fort Wayne Snider. Trent Johnson came up with 20 points in Mishawaka’s 78-76 overtime win over Calumet. Matt’s pick: Elkhart 65, Mishawaka 62.

Goshen (3-4) at Marquette Catholic (7-3): The RedHawks slipped past Marquette Catholic, 65-59, in the 2019-20 season. Quinn Bechtel added two points in Goshen’s 59-55 overtime victory at LaVille. Jason Kobe chipped in 12 points in the Blazers’ 63-40 win over Hebron. Matt’s pick: Marquette Catholic 61, Goshen 58.

Michigan City (7-1) at Plymouth (2-7): The Wolves roared to a 60-50 win against Plymouth last season. Tahan Watson drained eight three-pointers and finished with 32 points in Michigan City’s 69-63 win over New Prairie. . Nolan Bales poured in 16 points in the Pilgrims’ 37-35 win over Whitko. Matt’s pick: Michigan City 79, Plymouth 60.

NorthWood (7-1) at New Prairie (6-2): The Cougars edged NorthWood, 44-42, in their previous meeting. Ian Raasch led the Panthers with 14 points in a 54-37 win over Columbia City. Rylan McBride finished with 18 points for New Prairie against Michigan City. Matt’s pick: New Prairie 69, NorthWood 67.

Penn (2-1, 1-0 NIC) at Bremen (3-2, 0-1 NIC): The Kingsmen crowned Bremen, 59-40, a year ago. Casey Shultz had four points in Penn’s 50-34 win at Concord. Dawson Hickman contributed four points in the Lions’ 51-42 loss at No. 9 (Class 2A) Central Noble. Matt’s pick: Penn 58, Bremen 44.

Wawasee (3-3) at Central Noble (6-1): The Warriors downed Central Noble, 63-56, a season ago. Logan Gard delivered 13 points for the Cougars against Bremen. Kam Salazar accounted for five points and eight assists in Wawasee’s 56-52 overtime win over Fairfield. Matt’s pick: Central Noble 66, Wawasee 54.


Prairie Heights (2-7) at Concord (0-4): The Panthers cruised to a 63-34 win against Concord last season. Seth Troyer ended with 26 points in Prairie Heights’ 88-77 loss to Heritage. Payton Fish recorded 19 points in the Minutemen’s 45-39 loss to East Noble. Matt’s pick: Concord 48, Prairie Heights 46.


Bremen (4-2. 1-1 NIC) at Washington (1-4, 1-1 NIC): The Lions dropped a 73-38 decision to Washington a year ago. Tony Hardin tallied 15 points in Bremen’s 53-52 win over Penn. Cortez Redmond scored 10 points in the Panthers’ 65-51 loss at Northridge. Matt’s pick: Washington 60, Bremen 56.

Glenn (6-0, 1-0 NIC) at New Prairie (7-2, 3-1 NIC): The Falcons posted a pair of wins over New Prairie last year by scores of 48-30 and 58-53. Brycen Hannah poured in 25 points in Glenn’s 66-60 win over Clay. Grady Lapczynski netted 23 points in the Cougars’ 83-71 win over NorthWood. Matt’s pick: New Prairie 65, Glenn 61.

Jimtown (2-5, 0-3 NIC) at Clay (1-8, 0-3 NIC): The Colonials suffered a 52-42 loss to Jimtown last season. Darrian Gillespie finished with nine points in the Jimmies’ 57-39 win over Knox. Robert Allen had 22 points for Clay against Glenn. Matt’s pick: Clay 71. Jimtown 64.

Saint Joseph (6-2, 2-1 NIC) at Penn (2-2, 1-1 NIC): The No. 9 (Class 3A) Indians edged Penn. 63-57, a season ago. Will Terry registered 11 points for Saint Joseph in its 98-61 win over Twin Lakes. Cole Wojciechowski managed just five points for the Kingsmen against Bremen. Matt’s pick: Saint Joseph 74, Penn 65.


Adams (9-0, 3-0 NIC) at Marian (7-1, 1-1 NIC): The No. 7 (Class 4A) Eagles slipped past No. 6 (Class 3A) Marian, 57-54, a season ago. Sidney Jeffries accounted for 14 points in Adams’ 67-58 win at Valparaiso. Kyrell Franklin managed 10 points in the Knights’ 50-48 win over Lawrence Central. Matt’s pick: Adams 84, Marian 76.

Concord (1-4) at Goshen (3-5): The RedHawks flew past Concord, 60-33, last year. The Minutemen allowed just nine points in the opening quarter of their 59-35 win over Prairie Heights. Zach Subera finished with two points in Goshen’s 61-47 loss to Marquette Catholic.  Matt’s pick: Goshen 51, Concord 46.

Elkhart (4-5, 1-2 NIC) at Riley (6-3. 2-1 NIC): The Wildcats dropped a 60-52 decision to Elkhart in the 1971-72 season. Damarion Anderson contributed 17 points and 13 rebounds in the Lions’ 59-55 loss at Mishawaka. Jackson Copley accounted for five points in Riley’s 64-56 loss at Bowman Academy. Matt’s pick: Riley 74, Elkhart 65.

Glenn (7-0) at Triton (6-1): The Falcons soared to a 59-38 win over No. 10 (Class 1A) Triton last season. Joe Delinski netted 11 points in Glenn’s 50-46 win at New Prairie. Bruce Johnson racked up 15 points in the Trojans’ 83-55 win over Oregon-Davis. Matt’s pick: Glenn 47, Triton 42.

Mishawaka (3-1) at Plymouth (2-8, 0-1 NLC): The Cavemen clubbed Plymouth, 58-50, a year ago. Caleb Williams recorded nine points for Mishawaka against Elkhart. Owen Yoder ended with nine points in the Pilgrims’ 59-50 loss to Michigan City. Matt’s pick: Mishawaka 60, Plymouth 55.

Northridge (5-2) at Warsaw (5-5, 1-0 NLC): The Raiders captured a 2020 Class 4A sectional crown with a 60-38 win over Warsaw. Sam Smith netted 18 points for Northridge against Washington. Jackson Dawson accounted for six points in the Tigers’ 69-55 loss to No. 7 (Class 3A) Leo. Matt’s pick: Northridge 61, Warsaw 54.

Wawasee (3-4. 0-1 NLC) at NorthWood (7-2. 1-0 NLC): The Panthers earned a Class 3A sectional title last year with a 49-32 win over Wawasee. Collin Roberson mustered five points in the Warriors’ 56-21 loss at Central Noble. Jamar Jackson contributed 19 points for NorthWood against New Prairie. Matt’s pick: NorthWood 63, Wawasee 52.


Bremen (5-2) at Bethany Christian (3-6): The Lions clawed their way to a 57-38 win over Bethany Christian in their previous meeting. Carson Miller’s 30 points lifted Bremen to a 52-48 overtime win at Washington. Mason Closson finished with 15 points in the Bruins’ 50-46 loss to Argos. Matt’s pick: Bremen 47, Bethany Christian 39.

Elkhart Christian (2-3) at Washington (1-5): Jason Jones chipped in six points for the Panthers against Bremen. Noah Hunt accounted for 20 points in the Eagles’ 62-55 loss to Oregon-Davis. Matt’s pick: Washington 59, Elkhart Christian 48.

Tippecanoe Valley (1-7) at Plymouth (2-9): The Vikings edged Plymouth, 45-43, last year. Paul Leasure finished with 23 points in Tippecanoe Valley’s 60-56 loss to Northfield. Davis Wray ended with six points in the Pilgrims’ 48-37 loss to Mishawaka. Matt’s pick: Plymouth 45, Tippecanoe Valley 38.

Valparaiso (6-2) at Penn (2-3): The Kingsmen dropped a 54-48 decision at Valparaiso a season ago. Breece Walls had 11 points in the Vikings’ 59-35 win over Portage. Gabe Gatete added 11 points in Penn’s 74-48 loss to Saint Joseph. Matt’s pick: Valparaiso 67, Penn 58.
