The regular season closed on a positive note as I went 10-2 (83 percent) last week. Heading into the first week of the post-season, my overall record is 102-28, which keeps me at 78 percent for the year.


Saint Joseph (2-7) at Clay (1-8): The Indians rolled to a 50-20 win over Clay during the 2017 campaign. Matt Eck went 11-of-17 for 75 yards in Saint Joseph’s 48-0 loss to Marian. Kenny Lax accounted for eight tackles in the Colonials’ 54-0 loss to Bremen. Matt’s pick: Saint Joseph 34, Clay 6.

Logansport (3-6) at Riley (3-6) (Jackson Field): The Berries and Riley are meeting for the first time on the football field. Gavin Barron rambled for 134 yards and two touchdowns in Logansport’s 38-8 win over Anderson. Adam Bubelenyi returned a fumble 95 yards for a score in the Wildcats’ 31-6 loss to Jimtown. Matt’s pick: Riley 30, Logansport 27.

New Prairie (5-4) at Plymouth (1-5): The Cougars earned a sectional crown last year with a 35-27 win over Plymouth. Bobby Siford rushed for 100 yards and racked up 12 tackles in New Prairie’s 28-7 loss to No. 5 (Class 6A) Elkhart. Reggie Vasquez came up with five tackles in the Rockies; 37-12 win over Wawasee. Matt’s pick: New Prairie 39, Plymouth 16.

Culver Academy (3-5) at Kankakee Valley (5-3): The Eagles soared to a 28-14 win over Kankakee Valley during the 1992 campaign. Cooper Farrall had three catches for 59 yards and a touchdown in Culver Academy’s 24-14 loss to Guerin Catholic. Tyler Feddeler recorded a 19-yard touchdown catch in the Kougars’ 35-7 loss to No, 1 (Class 2A) Andrean. Matt’s pick: Kankakee Valley 32, Culver Academy 21.


Columbia City (6-3) at East Noble (6-3): The Knights crowned Columbia City, 27-10, on October 2. Greg Bolt tossed for 305 yards and four scores in the Eagles’ 45-34 loss to No. 7 (Class 3A) Norwell. Ethan Nichles accounted for seven carries for 54 yards and a touchdown in East Noble’s 42-0 win over Bellmont. Matt’s pick: East Noble 23, Columbia City 19.

Angola (5-2) at DeKalb (1-5): The Hornets swarmed past DeKalb, 55-18, on August 21. Tucker Hasselman returned an interception for a score in Angola’s 42-7 loss to No. 4 (Class 2A) Eastside. Corey Price was limited to 13 carries for 43 yards in the Barons’ 38-0 loss to No. 6 Leo. Matt’s pick: Angola 41, DeKalb 12.

Leo (8-1) at Northridge (6-2): The Raiders captured a sectional title in 2014 with a 9-7 win at Leo. Kaeden Miller registered nine rushes for 63 yards and two scores for the Lions against DeKalb. Breckin Judd recorded four receptions for 83 yards with a touchdown in Northridge’s 41-21 loss to No. 9 (Class 5A) Mishawaka. Matt’s pick: Leo 35, Northridge 28.

Wawasee (3-6) at NorthWood (3-3): The Panthers blanked Wawasee, 39-0, on September 18. Nate Larson scampered four yards for a score in the Warriors’ 37-21 win over Goshen. Ethan Evers rambled for two touchdowns in NorthWood’s 22-21 win over Warsaw. Matt’s pick: NorthWood 36, Wawasee 15.


Lakeland (2-7) at Marian (7-0): The No. 2 Knights cruised to a 60-0 win over Lakeland in the 2019 sectional opener. Ky’Rell Franklin hauled in a 30-yard touchdown pass for Marian against Saint Joseph. Colton Isaacs threw for 54 yards and ran for 85 yards and a score in the Lakers’ 35-6 loss to Bluffton. Matt’s pick: Marian 49, Lakeland 7.

Washington (3-6) at Tippecanoe Valley (6-3): The Panthers suffered a 19-14 loss to Tippecanoe Valley in last season’s sectional quarterfinals. Jeremy Johnson ran for 137 yards and tossed a pair of touchdown passes in Washington’s 35-13 win over Glenn. Jamasyn Virgil scampered for 43 yards and recorded six tackles in the Vikings’ 32-8 loss to No. 3 (Class 1A) Southwood. Matt’s pick: Tippecanoe Valley 25, Washington 18.

Jimtown (5-3) at Garrett (3-5): The Jimmies marched past Garrett, 30-7, a season ago in the sectional opener. Cole Thompson found the end zone three times for Jimtown against Riley. Kolin Cope tallied 25 carries for 163 yards and two scores in the Railroaders’ 28-21 win over Central Noble. Matt’s pick: Jimtown 33, Garrett 14.

Glenn (4-5) at West Noble (1-8): The Falcons are looking to make amends for a 26-0 loss to West Noble a year ago in the sectional quarterfinals. Max Murray scored a touchdown for Glenn against Washington. Randy Villeneuva returned an interception 40 yards for a score in the Chargers’ 34-0 win over Prairie Heights. Matt’s pick: Glenn 19, West Noble 10.


LaVille (5-1) at Lewis Cass (2-7): The Kings claimed a sectional championship last year with a 56-21 win over LaVille. Evan Bettcher ran for a pair of scores and caught a pass for another tally in the Lancers’ 42-6 win over Culver. Tyson Johnson rambled 33 yards for a touchdown for Lewis Cass in a 32-12 loss to Twin Lakes. Matt’s pick: LaVille 42, Lewis Cass 26.

Delphi (7-2) at Pioneer (8-1): The No. 3 Panthers edged Delphi, 21-14, in the 2002 season. Evan Fritz racked up seven carries for 140 yards and three touchdowns in the Oracles’ 56-6 win over Taylor. Brock Robinson accounted for 19 rushes for 105 yards and a score in Pioneer’s 32-13 win over North Judson. Matt’s pick: Pioneer 43, Delphi 13.

Bremen (7-2) at Rochester (0-7): The Lions opened the 2015 post-season with a 41-7 win against Rochester. Hunter Bennitt had a 22-yard reception for a touchdown, returned an interception 40 yards for a score, and took a punt back 40 yards for another tally for Bremen against Clay. Landon Kelly registered 28 rushes for 158 yards and two touchdowns in the Zebras’ 29-28 overtime loss to Maconaquah. Matt’s pick: Bremen 44, Rochester 8,

Wabash (5-4) at Manchester (2-7): The Apaches clawed their way to a 44-29 win over Manchester on September 4. Colten Learned ran 18 times for 101 yards and two scores in Wabash’s 41-24 win over Whitko. Brock Casper went 8-of-20 for 110 yards with a touchdown in the Squires’ 43-14 loss to Peru. Matt’s pick: Wabash 38, Manchester 34.
